Not for me
By Amazon Customer
I think this might work best for parents of easy to average children who feel they are in over their head due to their own parents not providing a role model that they care to emulate. It was not for me.

The program borrows from positive discipline and mindfulness acceptance therapy in about equal measure. (i.e. Give two positive choices, accepting the moment as it is and being in control of your reactions.) The book as a whole has a kind of Beatles /Buddhist flavor (ala `All You Need is Love`). There is a strong focus on relationship building, similar to both Greene or Gardener. All of the ideas were familiar, but recombined in an interesting way. The book offered a fresh viewpoint and some new tips for implementing the strategies.

I would describe this as a philosophical approach. Some research is sited. More research is alluded to, but not referenced (i.e. `unnamed research shows that...`). Also, the author is not clear regarding what research clearly shows, vs. conclusions she drew from the research herself, vs. what is more of a `personally held belief, not actually refuted by research I am personally familiar with`. It's similar to Dobson`s _The Strong-Willed Child_ and Greene`s. _The Explosive Child_ in this respect. The author has extensive experience in early childhood education. My understanding is that she has no children of her own.

I liked: Bailey's description of the Flip Flop was just great. I've read about the idea before; this description was the clearest I've seen. Also, her recommendations for being assertive and for staying calm were helpful. These weren't novel ideas, but more strategies to use on the tricky days are more than welcome.

I didn't love: (1) The writing seemed unnecessarily circular and repetitive to me. At one point, I thought I had lost my place (I hadn't.) (2) Bailey seemed to have some strongly held values, and didn't hold back. I wonder if she realized she is ok using praise to encourage characteristics she values (helpfulness, persistence), but is extremely hard on parents who reinforce success, stoicism, or compliance. I don't even disagree very much with her value system, I just found it odd that she didn't seem to realize it was the same general principle. She also had a fairly preachy, there is no such thing as `good enough parenting`, do it my way, or your kids will be in therapy forever tone at times. Which she alternated with, `just love yourself and accept the moment as it is`. I found the combination both irritating and jarring. (3) Finally, she stated her opinion just like it was a fact. I can read a book like that, because I'd take a tip from the devil himself, if it worked and didn't involve hurting anyone else. But I find it almost unbearably annoying.

You, on the other hand, may love this book and find it works beautifully with your child. I'd just recommend trying it at the library before you buy.

I will honestly admit that I started skimming about half way through, the second time Bailey said that chronic noncompliance had only 3 causal factors: Stress, chronic stress from a bad home life, and parents inadvertently reinforcing bad behavior. Which is simply not accurate, in addition to being demoralizing. Most of the experts in the field also talk about temperament (both child and parent), goodness of fit, and underlying disabilities (as well as subclinical issues). I wasn't enjoying the read anyway, and that was it for me. I don't need more of that in my life, I get plenty for free at the grocery store. I did keep a close eye out and double checked the back for citations. Didn't find any additional.

Wish I had this when my 5yr old was 3!
By C. Morton
I found myself mad at my 5 year old all the time, and very short tempered around him. It felt like I was always saying 'no' or 'stop that'. It got to the point where I didn't even want to take him anywhere because I didn't want to have to correct him the whole time we were there. In short, I was not having fun being a mom. This book was recommended to me and I started reading it thinking, 'oh my gosh, I do that, is that wrong? Is that why he acts this way? Is that why I act that way?' The book showed me where I had made some poor parenting choices and how re-phrasing things or giving my son real choices he was in charge of could make a big difference. I started changing the way I disciplined him immediately and it has made an immense difference! I've even got my husband to read it because he can see the change in both my son and me. I'm not angry all the time, my son isn't in time-out all the time. We're not fighting about getting dressed and getting in the car, and all the other things that are daily life chores that were once difficult. My style of parenting wasn't working and something had to change. This book made that change happen and has made our house and happier place. Don't get me wrong, there are still hiccups- but it doesn't turn ugly anymore. I only wish that I had known about this book when my son was 3.5 instead of 5, a lot of things could have been avoided!

Amazing Book!
By A. Alexander
This book has really changed the dynamics of our entire family and how we relate to one another. One youngest is fortunate enough to attend a cutting-edge lab NAEYC accredited lab school where they practice Conscious Discipline. As I watched her those first few months, I realized very quickly that she seemed to be better equipped with social/emotional skills than our oldest... and to some extent her parents! When you watch a toddler go from full-on toddler meltdown to watching her calm herself using deep breathing techniques that many adults can't even do, you start to wonder what this stuff is all about. We all began reading this book - parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles - and it has really helped all of us. People will often stop us and say, "WOW! That was amazing! How did you do that?" or "Can you teach me?" I love that Becky Bailey gives practical, real-life examples throughout the entirety of the book. Every sentence is full of things that you can immediately put to use. There are lots of highlighted sentences in our copies of this book. I've read TONS of parenting books, but none of them come close to this one. In my mind, there is nothing better out there anywhere!

Asbestos Head is the man
By Ashtar Command
CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS!!!

“Asbestos Head” is not a book about the Hollow Earth, as erroneously stated by one of the other reviewers. I downloaded the work (it's free) in the hope of reading some entertaining stuff about flat earth conspiracies or the like. Instead, I was forced to sift through a short fiction story with an almost stereotyped “hippie” message.

Everything is subjective, everything constantly changes, Christianity and capitalism are authoritarian, love and sex should be free, why bother having kids, smoking weed and using psychedelic drugs is the way to go, live in the Now, love and forgive everyone unconditionally, meditate รก la Zen, read Kerouac or Alan Watts…

Weirdly, this wasn't published circa 1967, but in 2008! I frequently laughed out loud when reading about Asbestos Head (the main character) and his weird friends Pin Head, Pot Head and Machine Head, to mention just a few. The hippie and love summer message is absolutely undiluted, making you see how absurd and unpractical it really is. Several characters are typical “misunderstood geniuses” or “INTJs” who come across as awkward and slightly autistic to everyone else. The solution to all problems seems to be to empty your mind and stop thinking altogether (or, I suppose, smoke weed). The anti-social angle is also obvious.

Interestingly, the short story has a misogynistic slant. The two women, Matriushka and Mary, are the two most negative characters. Mary (her name isn't a co-incidence) is depicted as a prostitute who once claimed to experience a virgin birth. Matriushka is a shallow promiscuous gossip who nevertheless demands “commitment” from Asbestos, who refuses and treats her to a lecture on free love. In the last chapter, Matriushka is locked up in a basement and apparently abandoned by a Zen monk! That a story about unconditional love and anti-authoritarianism turns out to be anti-female may or may not tell us something about the author's own “issues”. Another interesting fact is that Machine Head, who is a Cyborg and part of a hive mind, is treated as a positive alternative to humanity, although he too falls short of the true vibes of the Now.

What's the story *really* about? Presumably mimicking Robert Heinlein, the author reveals in the very last chapter that Asbestos Head is Jesus Christ who has returned to Earth to teach his true gospel. This presumably explains why his parents are named Joseph and Mary (the prostitute – note also the conflation of the Virgin Mary with Mary Magdalene), while Asbestos himself is said to be an “orphan”. Since Jesus-Asbestos turns out to be a hippie Buddhist, the world refuses to listen, prompting the misunderstood savior to commit Japanese-style suicide (seppuku) in the last chapter! Without this plot twist, the story would just be a long litany of pseudo-spiritual preaching for the eternally unsaved.

I was waiting for the Flat Earth /Hollow Earth material, so I admit I was somewhat disappointed by “Asbestos Head”, but I suppose you get what you (don't) pay for. The author Eric Dubay describes himself as a 30+ American living in Thailand where he teaches Yoga and Wing Chun part time while exposing the New World Order full time. His Youtube channel does include expositions on the Flat Earth, but also attacks on “Freemasons” and “Jews”, making you wonder how unconditionally he really loves his fellow men (or Cyborgs). But yes, if you're into conspiracy, I'm sure there's more where this stuff comes from…

From Booklist
In 2019, a mysterious, egg-shaped artifact is discovered on the ocean floor off the coast of Samoa. Denser than any known material, the object defies all attempts to either break through or communicate with it. Marine biologist Russell Sutton, whose last major feat was raising the Titanic, takes charge of the excavation, hoping to make a fortune by capitalizing on the artifact's probable extraterrestrial origin. Sutton little suspects that his destiny will soon intertwine with a pair of shape-shifting--and apparently immortal--aliens. One, known as the changeling, has been on Earth millions of years, assuming every identity from shark to human being, and slowly learning to love. The other, called the chameleon, has excelled in warlike roles and delights in killing. Neither knows of the other's existence, but their slowly merging paths will meet in a stunning climax that determines their ultimate fates--and that of the artifact. Award-winning sf veteran Haldeman proves as engaging a storyteller as ever, especially given this book's irresistible premise and page-turning action. Carl Hays

A quick and mostly painless read
By Oleg
This book fell into my hands when I was looking for a quick read while on travel. I only browsed the back cover and thought it might be interesting - which was a misunderstanding on my side that became clear already in the first chapter. First of all, shapeshifters really aren't my kind of thing even if they need more than a few seconds to change their appearance. The prehistoric introduction reads like an unsuccessful try at literature and gives away most of the details (or could-be-secrets) behind the aliens. There are some half-hearted tries to blend several war episodes with the story and set the stage for a twist in the end that really becomes very transparent already in the first half of the book. The aliens' motivations are barely beyond stereotypical, sometimes a little too obviously meant to be controversial when in fact they are not. The human side is even worse and borders on being embarrassing - one wants to suggest to move away from the ever-present war theme and spend a little more time on other aspects of human character. It's a short book though and the fast action carries it along too. I'll give Mr Haldeman an extra star for this one mainly because his "Marsbound" was infinitely worse and I still need to read the highly praised "Forever War."

A Love Story
By Conrad J. Obregon
There is a sub-genre of science fiction that I like to think of as the alien-encounter procedural. Among its most famous of members is Arthur C. Clarke's "Rendezvous with Rama". Humans meet a new species of alien and must figure out what procedures to follow to make some kind of contact. Emphasis is on the technology of contact, with suspense created by the unknown nature of the aliens. Often there is no emphasis on character development or illuminating human society by the strange circumstances. To maintain my interest the twists of the encounter or the solutions required must really be clever.

All this is by way of saying that when I encountered "Camouflage", I expected just such a story and had set my techno-bableometer to dampen. Boy, was I surprised!

Instead the story is told from the point of view of the alien and explores one of the most basic of literary questions, "What does it mean to be human?"

Joe Haldeman's writing is simple and direct and he does not search for colorful language. Instead, he weaves together three separate story lines, each with its own time scale, that come together in the finale. Occasionally you might think the author was moving into irrelevant areas but ultimately he brings the unities home. Moreover, at the same time as the main character is developing, Haldeman uses the device of the doppelganger, that is, a parallel personality, to contrast with the character of the hero. Moreover, he sets the story against an historical perspective of the last two thirds of the twentieth century, with a major portion of the story set against the fall of the Philippines and the horror of the Bataan death march at the beginning of World War II. The purpose of this lengthy excursion into history is to fine tune our sense of the development of the hero.

There are a few things that stretched my belief, particularly the behavior of one of the main human characters when he learns a secret of the alien, but I allowed myself to step back from my incredulity and to see it as a further device to explore the main question.

The story moves along quickly, or at least as quickly as I could turn the pages. This may not be amongst the greatest of science fiction novels, but it certainly illustrates how a good premise and construction of a novel can not only sweep us along, but even provide food for thought.

Familiar plot made fresh
By W. V. Buckley
Stop me if you've heard this before: A strange alien artifact is found at the bottom of the ocean and ... What's that? You say you have read that same plotline? Yeah, but not like Haldeman tells it.

In Haldeman's hands the story is fresh, thanks to his creation of two very different (from each other as well as from humans) aliens who quite possibly could be immortal. Both have been around long enough to have greeted mankind's first descent out of the trees. One has lived in the ocean, passing time as a great white shark, a killer whale and a dolphin until he (she? it?) takes human form and walks out onto a California beach in 1931. The other has much more experience with the human race and the concept of war.

When the artifact is discovered and taken to Samoa, the stage is set for the aliens and a small group of researchers to finally meet. But don't assume you can guess where the story goes from there. Haldeman is a master of taking readers' expectations and turning them upside down and inside out. He also tells the story in such straight-forward writing that you don't realize until you've finished the book that it was far deeper than you first thought. This is definitely one of those books I'll be saving to read again ... and I have no doubt I'll find new ideas and insights the second time around.

Want to be a certified tech? You need this
By Chobber Chick
I bought this to help prepare for the EETC test. It's one of the recommended texts. It's also a prep tool for the Briggs & Stratton certification test. If you're the curious type who likes to know all (and I do mean all) the nitty gritty details behind how and why small engines work, this is a great book. It contains detailed information about the various types of engines (including both two-stroke and four-stroke and multiple cylinder engines) a tech might encounter and covers troubleshooting and failure analysis extensively. There is a section on engine application and selection in the event you need to replace the original engine on a piece of equipment. A Windows-compatible CD-ROM is included but it wasn't that useful to me since it didn't have much content and most of it seemed overly simple. The workbook is helpful as a review, but you really need the answer key for it to be useful. If all you want to know is how to fix small engines, you can find less expensive books to use as a reference.

Awsome Book!

You know when you squirt a little carb cleaner into one hole in the carburetor and it comes shooting out from a totally unexpected place? This book explains what all those little passages are and how they make the carburetor work better. This book has really good diagrams and pictures to help explain everything.

Starts out simple, builds from there.
By Lois Mitchell
Great textbook. Starts out simple then builds from there. I did the workbook first. Reviewed the completed questions. Then I read the chapter with the new understanding I gained from doing the WB first. Last I received the class lecture. I had an understanding of what the teacher was talking about because of this book and workbook. I knew nothing about small engines before studying this book. Bruce Radcliff obviously cares about teaching and he is good at it. I bought this book from the college bookstore. It helped me so much, I decided to review it on Amazon. Thank you Amazon for giving me this opportunity.

If you're developing software that will be used by a large group of people, you need to give it a good-looking front-end--in Java 2, that means you have to use Swing. An excellent resource, Graphic Java 2: Mastering the JFC, Third Edition (Volume 2: Swing) takes on the Swing components one at a time and shows you how to incorporate them into attractive, efficient programs.

In many ways, Graphic Java 2 is a cookbook. You search the table of contents or index for a reference to the kind of problem you want to solve, then examine the author's examples for the solution (or at least some clues to it). This is the book to turn to if you're wondering how to implement the JComboBox.KeySelectionManager interface (which enables users to select items in a combo box) or compare the various ways of making the JTree component into a file browser. Those are just two of hundreds of examples in David Geary's book.

While most examples don't serve any practical purpose by themselves, they do clearly illustrate how a specific aspect of Swing works. It's easy to adapt the details presented here into your own programs. Geary shows consideration for the reader by presenting all his examples as programs that can be compiled and including them on the enclosed CD-ROM. --David Wall

Review
"At over 1500 pages, Graphic Java 2 is a monolith, heavy with details and weighted with valuable information for all Java UI developers. The coverage is meticulous and fluid, instructive in countless ways, unveiling things you won't find anywhere else. Yet it remains accessible to even a novice Swing developer. The net effect is that the price tag seems trivial given the value you can get from this book...

The coverage is not just impressive in its sheer volume; it's also an easy read with clear, concise explanations and useful examples...

All the fundamentals--in eloquent prose and incredible detail--are laid out before the reader in logical chapters that build on each other to unveil the most complete picture I've seen in print. I can hardly wait to read Volume III." -- DevX Book Reviews, July 29, 1999

"Thinking about making that jump from the AWT to Swing? Not sure where to start or how to go about it? Your search stops with David Geary's Graphic Java 2: Mastering the JFC...

Part 2 covers all the Swing components and their properties in detail; each component allocated a chapter. Two of the most complex components--Table and Tree--are covered in great detail and Chapters 19 and 20, respectively. These two chapters alone are worth the price of the book for serious Swing developers...

All in all, Geary has done such a thorough job in Graphic Java 2 that it can truly be considered the Swing bible. Don't let the size of the book intimidate you, it provides a top-level view as well as microscopic details on all Swing components. It will definitely prove to be an asset in the Swing developer's arsenal." -- Dr. Dobbs Journal, September, 1999

From the Inside Flap

Preface

This book has been my full-time passion for more than a year. After Sun closed its office in Colorado Springs in August of 1997, I decided to forego traditional employment to give the Graphic Java series my complete attention. I was determined that the Swing volume would be the definitive guide to Swing, which meant that it had to be the most comprehensive, accurate and insightful Swing book available. I believe that to be the case, but of course, you will be the final judge.

Before I began writing, I spent a considerable amount of effort designing a book that would be beneficial to Swing novices in addition to developers with some Swing experience. As a software developer who has used numerous object oriented GUI frameworks, I realized that the fastest way to climb a framework's learning curve is to study code examples that illustrate specific concepts. As a result, code examples are the foundation upon which this book is built; nearly 300 code examples are discussed in detail--an average of approximately one code example every 5 pages.

However, code examples in and of themselves, cannot suffice as a reference for developers who have advanced along the Swing learning curve. As a result, every Swing component discussion is accompanied by a component summary that includes class diagrams, an examination of the component's properties and events and a class summary that discusses the public and protected methods implemented by the component.

The first part of this book explores fundamental aspects of Swing including:

Swing applets and applications

Swing and multithreading

Swing's Model-View-Controller architecture

Pluggable Look And Feel

The JComponent class

Borders, icons and actions

Miscellaneous features including timers and Swing utilities

The second part of the book examines Swing's components in detail. Numerous code examples are discussed for every Swing component, from labels and buttons to tables, trees and the text package. For example, more than 150 pages containing 25 code examples are dedicated to the table component, and 120 pages and 20 code examples illustrate how to get the most out of the tree component.

Audience

This book assumes that the reader has a good grasp of the Java language including recent additions to the language such as inner classes. This book also assumes a rudimentary understanding of the AWT; specifically, the delegation event model and the Component and Container classes upon which all Swing components are based. See "Graphic Java 2 Mastering the JFC Volume I: AWT" for a thorough investigation of AWT infrastructure and components.

How To Use This Book

Before diving into the Swing components, it is useful to have an understanding of fundamental concepts such as Swing's Model-View-Controller (MVC) design and pluggable look and feel. The former is discussed in "Swing Component Architecture" on page 71 and the latter is covered in the "Pluggable Look and Feel" on page 317. It is also important to understand the services provided by the JComponent class, which is the ultimate superclass of all lightweight Swing components. The JComponent class is examined in "The JComponent Class" on page 123.

Component Summaries

Each Swing component is introduced with numerous code examples that illustrate various component features. Code examples are followed by component summaries, such as the JScrollPane component summary that is partially listed below.

Component summaries begin with a listing of the component's model, UI delegate, renderer and editor, in addition to the events fired by the component. If a component is a replacement for an AWT component, the AWT component is also listed.

JScrollPane

----

java.awt.ScrollPane

The static relationships that a component maintains with other objects are illustrated with a class diagram, such as the class diagram for the JScrollPane class shown above. Class diagrams are introduced in Appendix A, Class Diagrams .

Properties

Property tables, such as the property table for the JScrollPane class shown below, are used to communicate a component's properties. Property tables include property names, the property's data type and whether a property is boolean, bound (a property change event is fired when the property is changed), simple (no events are fired when the property is changed), constrained (changes to the property can be vetoed), or indexed (a parameter, usually an integer , is used to access the property).

Some properties can be specified when a component is instantiated, and a component may provide setter and getter methods for a property. The manner in which a property can be specified is listed in the Access column of a property table.

Property tables also include a column for property default values.

Property tables are followed by a short description of each of the properties listed in the table.

The remaining property descriptions for the JScrollPane class are omitted.

Events

Code examples are presented that illustrate event handling for a component. For example, the Tree chapter provides five code examples that illustrate handling of tree mouse, editing, selection, and expansion events.

Class Summaries

Each component summary concludes with a class summary that provides descriptions of the component's constructors and methods, such as the class summary for the JScrollPane class listed below.

JScrollPane

JComponent

ScrollPaneConstants, javax.accessibility.Accessible

public JScrollPane()

public JScrollPane(int vsbPolicy, int hsbPolicy)

public JScrollPane(Component view)

public JScrollPane(Component view, int vsbPolicy, int hsbPolicy)

JScrollPane provides four constructors. The integer values passed to JScrollPane

constructors represent the vertical and horizontal scrollbar display policies, in that order. The component passed to the constructors is used as the viewport's view, meaning it is the component that is scrolled by the

scrollpane.

The no-argument constructor constructs a scrollpane with a null component for the viewport's view, and scrollbar display policies that display both the horizontal and vertical scrollbars as needed.

Creation Methods

public JScrollBar createHorizontalScrollBar()

public JScrollBar createVerticalScrollBar()

protected JViewport createViewport()

Like most Swing components, JScrollPane

provides create... methods that create its subcomponents. Unlike most Swing components however, JScrollPane implements the methods that create its scrollbars as public instead of protected because the methods are invoked from the scrollpane's UI delegate.

The createHorizontalScrollBar and createVerticalScrollBar methods both return instances of JScrollPane.ScrollBar , which is an extension of JScrollBar that takes into account whether the scrollpane's view implements the Scrollable

interface. See Interface Summary 13-2 on page 779 for more information on the Scrollable interface.

The createViewport method returns an instance of JViewport that is used as the

scrollpane's default viewport.

As with all Swing components that implement create... methods, the methods can be overridden in extension classes to replace the default sub-components with custom versions.

The remaining method descriptions for the JScrollPane class are omitted.

Swing Bugs

Swing has come a long way in terms of quality. The early beta releases contained numerous bugs, many of which have subsequently been fixed. However, like any software, Swing still has its share of bugs. Throughout this book, I have tried to point out as many bugs as possible so that developers can avoid the frustration of debugging code only to discover that a problem is due to a Swing bug.

It is also important to keep in mind that this book is based on Swing 1.1 FCS. As we went to press, a 1.1.1 version of Swing was released that was mostly a bug fix release. Therefore, it is a certainty that some of the bugs cited in this book will have been fixed by the time this book is on the shelves.

Using the CD-ROM

The CD in the back of the book contains the following:

1.1.7 JDK and Swing 1.1.1

1.2 JDK and Swing 1.1 FCS

Code examples from this book

Swing and the JDK

As mentioned previously, Swing 1.1.1 is mostly a bug fix release. Swing 1.1.1 does not work with the 1.2 JDK, and therefore the 1.1.7 JDK is included on the CD. Swing 1.1 FCS works with both the 1.1.7 and 1.2 versions of the JDK.

Code Examples from the Book

All of the code examples in this book that are accompanied by a CD-ROM icon are included on the CD in the back of the book. Figure P-1 shows the directory structure for the code examples. A directory exists for every chapter in the book, and subdirectories are included for each example, which should make it trivial to locate examples. For instance, Example 3-1 on page 91 can be found in the chapters/3/1 directory.

Every example is compiled and ready to run. Some of the directories representing code examples contain a README.txt file if the examples exhibit bugs or have been modified from their listing in the book.

The CD also contains two versions of the GridBagLab application that comes with "Graphic Java 2 Mastering the JFC Volume I: AWT." One version uses external windows and another uses Swing internal frames. The application provides an example of a fairly complete Swing application and illustrates the use of Swing internal frames. Additionally, the application can be used to explore the intricacies of the GridBagLayout layout manager.

Applets Vs. Applications

Most of the code examples discussed in this book are applets, but a fair percentage of examples are applications. Applications are typically implemented instead of applets either because files are manipulated or dialogs are shown--applets have restricted access to files, and under JDK 1.2 dialogs displayed from an applet contain a warning string. Sometimes applications are implemented instead of applets simply for the sake of variety. Nearly all of the applications discussed in this book that do not manipulate files can easily be rewritten as applets.

The book "Graphic Java2, Volume 2, Swing (3rd Edition)" comes in two formats. One version is the big monster -- all 1622 pages in one binding (plus cd). The other version is the two separate books, **PART A** and **PART B** (but the cd is not included here).

So once you have the complete book, you should be impressed with David M. Geary's comprehensive guide to the Swing framework. However, if you are new to Swing, I recommend you first read a tutorial on Swing in some beginner's book (such as "Java All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies" by Doug Lowe and Barry Burd pages 527-627). Then when you return back to Geary's book, you dig deeper into Swing (at a more intermediate level).

I also have Kim Topley's book "Core Java Foundation Classes." Comparing the two books, Geary uses more diagrams which helps me to learn faster and to visualize the structure of Swing. As a concrete example, in Geary's book on page 1076 is the diagram of Figure 18-2 of "Combo Box Models." He has the tree structure of the different classes and interfaces, visually showing you the Combo Box Model types, what they implement and what they extend. On page 612 of Topley's book is only text, no diagram. Nevertheless, I use both Geary's and Topley's books; they complement one another. Sometimes Topley explains a concept better than Geary; other times it's vice versa.

Geary's book serves a dual purpose. It is both for learning Swing and for use as a reference. The problem with O'Reilly's "Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell" is that as a reference, it doesn't adequately explain what the different methods (of the various classes) actually do; it merely lists them. Whereas with Geary, the methods are explained -- hence the 1622 pages of material. (The Nutshell book is 731 pages; it's still good as a quick reference, though.)

I also recommend Geary's first book of the series, "Graphic Java_1.2, Volume 1, AWT." It is fun reading and only 878 pages.

Please be aware that Geary's purported books "Graphic Java2, Volume III, Advanced Swing" and "Graphic Java2, Volume IV, 2D API" do not exist. If they had at one time existed, then they have somehow disappeared. I wonder if they were even ever written? It is a shame; David M. Geary is a good writer and I would have enjoyed his other volumes.

Lots of details, no big picture, and no index
By Aleksandar Totic
I have never used Swing before. It seemed like a right choice for my latest app, whose main target is a small set of cross-platform developers. Because of the audience, I did not have to worry about getting that platform look-and-feel just right, and it is a 6 week project.

I've done a lot of GUI work, so coding a new one is mostly a matter of figuring out "how do they implement this feature that I've done in 3 other toolkits". I like an overview, describinh general philosophy and main features: what's the frame hierarchy, menus, command chains, graphics model.

I did not get this out of this book. There was a lot of detail, but no big picture, no "how do I get things done". The navigation was awkward, especially since there is no index. The index is in Volume III, which I do not have. That alone is just silly. It is as if they wrote one book, and then just chopped it into 2 parts.

I got what I needed from Core Java(TM), Volume I--Fundamentals and Core Java, Vol. 2: Advanced Features. Surprisingly, their swing coverage was enough to get me on the right track, the rest I can google.

approachable and thorough
By Technomage
I found this book to be a thorough start-to-finish explanation of Swing, with detailed coverage of each component. There is a wealth of online information about Java and Swing, and there are also other Swing books, but I never saw the big picture until I bought this book. A MUST READ for any Java GUI developer. Other reviewers have stated that this book was too complex for beginner and intermediate developers. I strongly disagree. Swing itself is complex and powerful, and to leverage its full potential requires advanced programming skill. However I do not believe it, or this book, could be made any simpler and remain as useful and powerful. If you want simplicity, get a book on VB!

Shemot: Defining a Nation (Torah Lights Book 2), by Shlomo Riskin

For Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Torah is at once the oldest and the most contemporary document directing human lives. In this highly acclaimed, five-volume parashat hashavua series, Rabbi Riskin helps each reader extract deeply personal, contemporary lessons from the traditional biblical biblical accounts. As Rabbi Riskin writes in the introduction to Torah Lights, “The struggle with Torah reflects the struggle with life itself. The ability of the Torah to speak to every generation and every individual at the same time is the greatest testimony to its divinity.”

A rabbi covers many interesting subjects in Exodus
By Israel Drazin
This is the second of so-far three volumes in which Rabbi Shlomo Riskin offers his views on the Torah. Readers may want to look at my review of his first volume, on Bereshit, to find out about Rabbi Riskin and his accomplishments. In this second volume, he offers from six to nine short incisive thought-provoking commentaries on each of the ten biblical portions that are read in synagogues from the book of Exodus, called Shemot in Hebrew. The essays generally combine a relevant and traditional approach to the Bible with many references to current events and time-honored and long-established Bible commentaries. He offers incisive answers to many interesting questions.

He points out in his introduction that Maimonides felt that the first book of the Bible, Genesis, is Scripture's most important volume because it teaches that humans are created in the divine image, meaning that they have intelligence, and it urges people to use their intelligence. Maimonides also read into Genesis that every person, no matter what his or her religion, is a creation of God and must be respected and treated properly. However Rabbi Riskin prefers the view of the poet Yehuda HaLevi who felt that the most important book is Exodus because it speaks of the story of the birth of Israel.

Rabbi Riskin discusses many subjects. For example, in his first essay, he points out how important women are in Judaism. They hold the family together and help Judaism survive. Pharaoh made a strategic mistake when he told two women to kill all the Israelite males; he would have been more successful in exterminating the Israelites if had he tried to kill the females. Also, tradition states that the two women to whom he assigned this murder were Israelites, and they didn't carry out his instructions.

In another discussion, he tells why God appeared to Moses in a non-extinguished fire in a thorn bush. What do the burning fire and lowly thorn bush signify? Do they have meaning for us today? Does every rabbi agree what these items mean? Do they tell us something about God or how people relate to God?

Rabbi Riskin explores a host of other subjects, such as the following: What do the various names of God signify? Are they actually God's names, or are they relating something about how God acts? Why was Moses reluctant to accept God's mission? Can a prophet refuse to do what God commands? Who really hardened Pharaoh's heart? Did God make him do something bad? When should a person pray and when act instead? What do we mean by the concept of a chosen people? Who is a Jew? What is more important, the people or God? What is the Jewish view of abortion? What were the cherubs placed on the ark? May Jews count people? How should we handle the uncertainties of life?

Thus, as we can see, Rabbi Riskin covers many interesting subjects, and he does it well.
