Best for older beginners and some experience

Pretty cool book with loads of examples and ideas, but I don't consider it beginner. There are somewhat advanced techniques of observation, shading, perspective and proportion which are above the abilities of most small children or adults learning to draw for the first time. That said, if you have a pre-teen/teen drawer with some experience and a great imagination (or you're an adult fan of fantasy looking to refresh your skills), this would make an awesome gift/guide.

This isn't the next great danish novel. But it's a very entertaining, funny and titillating read. I give the author credit for managing to write a compelling story that has you continuing to read just to see what happens next.

Fun, sexy and relentlessly entertaining.

Told from the pov of an 'everyman' with some notably unusual history, this story develops at a rambling pace and never really slows down till the end. The humor is in turns dry, juvenile, subtle and wickedly direct, I have multiple laugh out loud moments.
While the bumbling angst of the main character was a central plot/character point, it rankled a little bit.
The eroticism is decent, but not the focus. The characters are believable in that they are flawed, make mistakes, and don't always 'get over' those mistakes. I wasn't sure I was pulling for the ending as it happened, but I was genuinely happy when it did.
One of the better stories of it's kind that I've read, I would give it a 4.5 if I could.

Poorly Written and Lacking Clarity

Our professor allowed us to use the sixth edition instead of the seventh edition because of how limited the number of changes in the newer version are. I of course opted for the much cheaper sixth version. After reading just the first two chapters of this book, I feel I know enough to give a review of this book. The book has good content, but the writing is poor. Not only is the book repetitive (How many times do you have to state that an IEP is unique to every individual?), it has an atrocious lack of copyediting. Take, for example, this sentence on pages 26-27: "The implications of this decision are enormous (Katsiyannis & Yell, 2000): the costs for additional personnel (potentially between $20,000 and $40,000 per school year), but increased liability for schoools, additional considerations for individualized education program (IEP) teams, the administrative costs for increased staff, and the complications of yet another adult in a classroom." There is also this on page 53 (in bullet point form): "NCLB considers teachers to be highly qualified if they can demonstrate adequate knowledge in the core academic subjects...that they currently teach by passing a state academic subject test; completing coursework equivalent to an academic major, degree, certification or credentialing; pass a 'high objecting uniform state standard of evaluation' (HOUSSE)". While it is possible to get what the author means in these sentences, it takes a while, as you are forced to ask "Am I reading this correctly?" and "What did the author intend to write?" because of the word "but" in the first sentence and the lack of a conjunction and parallelism at the end of the second one.

This poor writing translates into a lack of clarity at many parts of the book, as does internal contradiction. For example, due to one part of the book being updated, while another wasn't, page 34 stated that "Well over half of [students with disabilities] participate in general education classes for well over 80 percent of every school day", while page 51 states "...and today, if we include high school students, that proportion is even closer to half". I looked it up at the source given for 2005 (which was what both were referenced to), and it turns out that it was 54 percent making the second statement false. The first statement is poorly worded, however; 54 percent hardly qualifies as "well over half" and the statistic is not for "well over 80 percent of every school day" but simply "over 80 percent of every school day". I cannot speak on if the new version has the same kinds of mistakes. Hopefully, they have been fixed, but if you are buying from a brick-and-morter store, I would first check to see if these mistakes are still in there.

A wonderful introduction to the history and realities of special education

I am training to be a California secondary teacher in Los Angeles County. It is a difficult job but a rewarding one. I am not interested, at least presently, in teaching special education but I will have to know how to deal with students with special needs. This book is well written, and includes all of the information one will need for an introduction to special education.

Originally, the sender sent me the wrong book, but then after I notified her she was very professional and sent me the original book I ordered. The book is in fair condition just like it was described. There was some highlighting, but that doesn't bother me at all.

Of all the military campaigns fought by the British during the 19th century, no area saw more conflict than the subcontinent of India. Dozens of encounters, both great and small, involved many of its races as either friends or foes of Britain - indeed, it was not unusual for an area to furnish both ally and enemy at the same time! This volume covers the British, Indian and Anglo-Indian troops who fought for The Honourable East India Company and Britain over the varied landscape of what is present day Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, between the years 1826 and 1859.

The vast array of uniforms and dress worn by soldiers serving in India during this period is examined in detail, and extensive information is also provided on regimental Colours. The book's nine chapters cover the campaign in Bhurtpore (1825-26); the Coorg campaign (1834); the First Afghan War (1839-42); the conquest of Sind (1843); the campaign against Gwalior (1843); the Sikh Wars (1845-46 and 1848-49); actions on the North-West Frontier (1849-58); the Santhal Rebellion (1855-56); and the Indian Mutiny (1857-59).

Each of these chapters includes uniform information specific to the campaign covered, while that on the Indian Mutiny also includes details of Mutineer dress. Many orders of battle and battle-plans are also included. Illustrations comprise 199 drawings of troop types and flags, and 27 other illustrations and maps

This book covers some of the forgotten wars that the British Empire has fought on the Indian subcontinent.Although an Englishman or an Indian might remember them, they remain largely unknown to Americans.(who don't much remember their own history!)
As in other books in this series,the emphasis is on the dress of the combattants,with some maps and order of battle information.The book only covers the Brtish and the Indians who fought beside them- the Indians and other enemies of the Raj will be covered in another book(waiting for that one...)
In order the chapters are,The Seige Of Bhurtpore 1825-26,The Coorg Campaign 1834,The First Afgan War 1839-42,The Conquest Of Sind 1843,Gwalior 1834,The Sikh Wars 1845-46 and 1848-49,(Britain's toughest fight,until the Mutiny.)The North-west Frontier 1849-58,The Santhal Rebellion 1855-56( so obscure the author had trouble finding any references to it!)And finaly the Indian Mutiny 1857-59, wich shook the Empire to it's core.

This book is great. It gives the history of the British rule in India. From 1825 to 1857, each battle with maps. Great pictures and descriptions of uniforms worn by each regt. Also description of Indian troops during each period of conflict. Highly recommend for figure painters.

A chance to return to the past! I LOVED it!

I LOVE time travel books and movies. My favorite movie is Peggy Sue Got Married, so when I read the description of this book, I could not wait to read it. I was not disappointed! I loved it! I would LOVE to be able to go back in time armed with the knowledge I have gained thus far. I think more than anything, I would appreciate the times and the people from the past…cherish them. I don’t think I’d really change anything – I would just enjoy it more.

At age 38, Ramie Phillips is has led a very successful life - but even though she enjoys all the luxuries she ever dreamed of having, she realizes that she isn’t really happy. On a boat outing with friends, she goes to the diving board and dives off – only to be woken by her mother’s voice calling to her to get out of bed and get ready for school. Huh? What’s going on? I think that maybe all of us at some time or another have wished to be able to go back in time and do something over again, see lost friends or relatives, not make the same mistakes…Some of us would like to change things. The thing that this book makes you think about is the long term effects of what those changes would mean. How would they really impact the rest of your life, as well as those around you? It’s definitely something to ponder – and I admit that I really have been since reading this book. It makes you look at things from a different perspective – VERY thought provoking!

Beth Harbison has grabbed my heart with this story. She made me realize that the bad things that we survive, shapes who we become – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It also made me look at my life and start appreciating every day that I am given. Yep, that’s pretty profound! Thank you for that, Ms. Harbison!

For me, IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME was a magical experience. My take-aways were:
1) A story doesn't have to be about a big, sweeping tragedy or event to make it worthwhile. It can be about a series of small events that resonate with your life and cause you to think.
3) A touch of magical realism never hurts anything and generally helps.
4) We believe what we choose to believe.
5) Visiting with old friends, even old friends who need a good lecture, is always a welcome thing.
6) Sometimes, all it takes to get you out of a reading slump is one fantastically engaging book. This is it!

I highly recommend this wonderful story. It will change you. All of us are different, so it will affect us in different ways – but good ones. It made me cry happy tears. That is always a good thing.

if you loved the movie About Time...

To the point: This is a lot of fun for lovers of the movies About Time (Rachel McAdams) and 13 Going on 30 (Jennifer Garner). I loved the book myself and thought it was a perfect time for me to read it.

Review: Okay so let’s just be upfront. I have a lot going on in my life. A lot of mistakes were made in my medical history by insignificant doctor’s that ultimately led me to where I am now. I am struggling with a difficult situation and often find myself taking what I do have for granted due to my suffering. If you read my review on What Alive Forgot by Line Moriarty you probably know that book had a profound affect on me. It reminded me to take the opportunity to appreciate things as they are and really take advantage of the ability to be happy ever day that I have.

This book ultimately had the same effect, though it is quite a different story. The time travel sense of this book is science fiction but the lessons are the same. If you had the ability to change the past would it actually be beneficial. It had me thinking that if I could go back and save my health would I still have my children. What these kind of books are really saying is, you can’t save the good and get rid of the bad. The bad stuff you go through really shapes who you are and how you appreciate the good things you have.

This book was written really well, it is easy to follow, easy to understand but still very imaginative. I appreciate an author who can inspire my intelligence without getting lost. I definitely think this is a book for most people to put on the top of their TBR’s. It’s a feel good story, and you’ll take a different perspective on your life away from the story.

Too Much Advice, Not Enough Fun

Love the premise, didn't love the execution. I felt like I was always being taught a lesson. And honestly I want to know what happened to Brendan. I enjoyed most of the stuff with Ramie and her dad, as I'm a daddy's girl myself.

Jen Lancaster's Here I Go Again is the same type of story, but way more fun. Ramie seemed so confused and scared by being back in high school (as I'm sure one would be scared to time travel 20 years in the past), but in Here I Go Again, Lissy had fun with it, and actually did things differently. Again, I just felt like Ramie was looking for life lessons around every corner, and nothing really came of her time traveling. Both of her best friends are about to become parents and aren't going to have as much time for her anymore. Give her a few months and she probably would have opened up the dating website without the whole going back in time thing.

Not a terrible book, but if someone were to ask me for a fun time-travel-back-to-high-school book I'd recommend Jen Lancaster's story before this one.
