Research into the physical properties of organic solids, especially those containing conjugated pi-electron systems, has developed into an active and attractive sub-area of solid-state physics over the last few decades.
There are several reasons for this development. First of all, there is the enormous diversity of properties typical of organic solids, such as long-distance energy conduction via excitons without electric-charge transport. With the powerful methods of organic chemistry, it is possible to vary these properties over wide ranges with "tailor-made" molecules. Secondly, new applications are under development, such as organic light-emitting diodes and novel molecular electronics, which supplement electronic components based on inorganic semiconductors. Finally, organic solids represent a link between traditional physics and biological physics: Organic solid-state physics has made important contributions to the clarification of the elementary processes of photosynthesis, for example.

Organic Molecular Solids has been written for graduate students and researchers, but will also be an interesting and valuable information source for all physicists, physical chemists and chemists wishing to learn more about the fascinating variety of organic solids. This is an introduction to the fundamentals of this topic, featuring detailed references, reading lists and problems.

About the Author
Professor Markus Schwoerer studied physics at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in 1967. In 1975, he accepted a professorship for experimental physics at the University of Bayreuth. He received the Annual Award for Chemistry from the Academy of Science at Gottingen in 1974. From 1996 to 1998, Professor Schwoerer was the President of the German Physical Society. His main research interest is the physics of organic solids.

Professor Hans Christoph Wolf studied physics, chemistry and biology in Freiburg and Tubingen, both Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in 1952. From 1952 to 1954, he held a post as a researcher in physical chemistry at the Technical University of Munich. After working for several years as an assistant professor, he was awarded a full professorship at the Third Physical Institute of the University of Stuttgart, of which he also became the director, and from which he retired in 1997. Professor Wolf received the Otto Hahn Award of the German Physical Society and the Society of German Chemists in 2000. He was a member of the editorial boards of numerous international journals and is one of the most renowned and established authors in the fields of atomic and quantum physics. His field of research is the physics of organic solids.

Normajean Hinders is a licensed Marriage, Family Therapist, author, conference speaker and consultant. Prior to her almost 20 years as a psychotherapist, her work covered the counseling and education of older adolescents onthe San Francisco Peninsula. Her experience includes work with individual and family issues, addiction intervention and recovery, and assisting individuals and couples in the recovery from dysfunctional patterns learned in childhood.She has been heard on numerous radio and television programs across the country. Normajean has been married for over thirty years and has two married adult children with a grandchild on the way.

Seasons of a Woman's Life

I believe that this book is an anointed message for woman. It really causes a woman to look at where she has been, in other words, the events in our lives are determining factors in the season that we are in. It shows you who you are, it gives you a "woman's sense of self." Life is made up of transitions, and growth causes us to transition from one season to another, but tragedy and grief also causes us to transition from one season to another. If you are a woman, and you are stuck in one place, this book is a great tool. Each chapter ends with questions or reflections that help guide you through your search for self and identity. It talks about growth, change, purpose, balance, awakenings, spiritual renewal, forgiveness, new beginnings, expression, harvest and revival and the list goes on. It is best to get the book and allow your life to be changed forever. This is a book that will help women for generations to come. It is a great tool for Women's Ministry as well as for personal growth and enjoyment.

Thorough but not in depth presentation of recent traceability developments in the food industry.Excelent general presentations of various authors with different fields of expertise.
Although a general and not targetting on a specific area of the food industry(which is multioriented anyway) it is a very helpful book for the novice and the experienced food scientist or student.I would prefer it more analytical though and solution providing, that what I was looking for and didnt find in this book.Excelent choice though for your library.

About the Author
Dieter Sevin, a native of Germany, was Professor of German at Vanderbilt University. He received grants from organizations such as the American Philosophical Association, American Council of Learned Societies, German Academic Exchange Service, and the Vanderbilt Research Council.

Ingrid Sevin, a native of Germany, has been teaching German and French at the high school and college level in the United States and in Germany for more than ten years. From 1987 to 2002, she was the editor of the German audio-magazine SCHAU INS LAND.

If you're purchasing this for a class...

WAIT until the class begins. I bought this book via Amazon a few weeks before my courses began. Once I received the syllabus, I was told that I had to have a shrink-wrapped version that includes a "key-code". This is for accesing an online workbook and other accompanying material-which my professor does use/grade.

I ended up purchasing another copy of this book (for $200) from the bookstore, with the key code. So I've spent $300+ on two books and one key-code...now I have an extra German book. I'm hesitant to sell it too, 'cause I don't want to put someone in the same position I was in.

The site that uses the key-code and provides the online material (Quia) is not very clear on what you need to purchase if you have the book already...if it even sells that. I e-mailed them, and it's equally vague. Most of my classmates and I who were in this situation just avoided the headache by buying from the bookstore instead of trying the online site. Of those who did buy from the site, most ended up purchasing the wrong package, and getting either another book anyway or only part of the online sections, for more money.

I've also done some searching, and have found this to be a problem with many students, in many language courses. (I guess the bookstores aren't done figuring out how to put us father in debt...joy...)

So my advice:
Save your money and talk to your professor before purchasing from a non-academic site. Or just eat the cost and use the bookstore. $200 is a LOT cheaper than $300+.

It is a good book, though. (Which is why it's received 3 stars.) The info seems practical and handy. :-)

Just don't let 'em screw over any more students!

Great reference for writers

With the errors in the book noted by the other reviewer here aside, this is an excellent, brief and colorful reference book for the writer or student who needs a tidy overview of the title topic. I do wish it went into more detail; for example, what KIND of wagons? How large? Covered or open? Were seats built into them, or onto the front end of them? What kind of "trap" technology made it possible to hitch the animal to the wagon? Sometimes I think research books are written with too much assumption that the audience knows the basics. For city slickers (like myself) however, even current hitching methods would be news. So I wish these research books had more detail of that nature. But again, for a good overview, you can't go wrong with this book.

How to get a B- on an A+ research paper

Fiona MacDonald has done her usual wonderful job of presenting historical material in a balanced and interesting way to middle school students. The text of "Travel and Trade in the Middle Ages" is engaging from the first page to the last, and the numerous illustrations have been very carefully chosen. This is a real winner - until you get to page 37.

Perhaps the publisher changed editors at the very last minute. Maybe the book was late to the printers. At any rate, on page 37 a caption to an illustration describes the piece as containing a skull to "remind both of their eventual deaths." A nice flight of fancy - but there is no skull in the picture, just a little white dog asleep on a cushion at his mistress' feet. On page 40 you will find another lovely old illustration, together with a caption telling the reader that it shows a "jeweler, a herbalist and a baker (left to right)." Perhaps that is the case, if you eliminate the butcher very clearly carving up a pig, but the far right portion of the picture shows only a man with his hand in a bowl. Nothing of any sort at all to indicate a baker.

One particularly nice feature of "Travel and Trade..." is the inclusion of short quotations from Middle Ages authors every couple of pages, duly footnoted and cited in the back of the book. Wonderful - until page 40. The footnote to the quotation of page 40 is numbered 21. So is the quotation on page 38. The last two quotations are noted as 24 and 25; 22 and 23 are missing from the text. The bibliography, however, contains citations for 22 and 23, but not 24 and 25 - and of course only one 21, leaving the reader to guess which quotation 21 it belongs to.

I am left to conclude only that the person responsible for editing this book suddenly went blind, turning what might have been an A+ book into one that deserves only a B-.

although i am a newly graduated architect i found this book very useful in the field of arch. presentation and drawing as it learns you how to draw plans and section in an effective and easy way , it concentrates on pencil drawing more than colors as it is the baisc drawing machine in addition to some colored examples , Very recommended for new arch. students ....

Not worth the price

I bought and returned this book because I read positive reviews. I am a landscape designer, and have been one for many years, but I do all my drawing in CAD (on the computer). I was looking for something to help with hand drawing, especially perspectives. This is definitely a book for beginners. And even for beginners, I think it is pretty expensive.
