Bravo and Accolades!!!

Baillie is such a breath of fresh air in the world of science, archaeology, climatology, and dating; even geology and astronomy. It all becomes relevant here. Archaeology is often lacking hard science in my view, but not so with Baillie. He understands and tries to obey the proper scientific method and he lacks the prejudice and the "chip on the shoulder" when it comes to various records of peoples of the past. If you want a well explained and thorough summation of tree ring dating, Climate factors, geological aspects, etc, this is for you and you will not regret it. Dendrochronology as they call dating using tree rings, is a far more precise science than is say Carbon 14. Carbon 14 is useful and has its place but it also has many limitations. Tree rings have theirs, too, in that though you have a precise year for a climate event, tracking down the causes can be a challenge. But if a good match is available, you have the most certain form of dating there is. Only astronomy can rival this. If you are into dating science, this is the Tree Rings 101 that you don't want to be without. I actually find his geological info also very fascinating. He has often worked with Clube and Napier, of Comet and Astronomical fame, which soft imprecise sciences such as Archaeology do not like, due to its interfering with their established work and propaganda. I am still reviewing this at times. Can't say enough good about it.

Excellent; strongly recommend.

This is probably the best overall book on dendrochronology for the non-specialist. I like Mr. Baillie's writing and wry sense of humor. He presents a very balanced overview on both dendrochronology's unique strengths but also some pitfalls for the unwary. The discussion of the dating of Thera is the best I have read.

One of the best!

If you have read other books by Zola, then you know what to expect. It has rich descriptions, realistic characterization (none of the characters are one dimensional), and an insight into the thought processes of the protagonists that will draw you immediately into the world of the department store. It has a nice tug of war between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie without being trite or unrealistic. Hugely recommend for ages 12 onwards.

Silver anniversary edition hits gold

The silver anniversary edition is an updated version of the classic work originally published in 1971. How can this still be relevant? Easy: people haven't really changed.

Weinberg did something courageous in his updated text. Instead of whitewashing history, he let his original text stand, unedited, and simply commented on each chapter separately. The approach worked for me, making an already entertaining text a joy to read.

What is all this about? Weinberg writes "This book has only one major purpose--to trigger the beginning of a new field of study: computer programming as a human activity, or, in short, the psychology of computer programming. All other goals are subservient to that one." Indeed there has been much study of computer programming as an art and as a discipline for individuals and for groups. This book may represent the beginning of that noble effort.

Don't be put off by the technology Weinberg occasionally uses within the text. At the time of this book's writing, FORTRAN, PL/1, and APL were in common use and OS/360 was the defacto standard. If echoes of the past bother you, ignore them! Instead, concentrate on Weinberg's main topic: the people who develop software systems. For example, consider the following: "...the average programming manager would prefer that a project be estimated at twelve months and take twelve than the same project be estimated at six months and take nine. This is an area where psychological study could be rewarding, but there are indications from other situations that it is not the mean length of estimated time that annoys people, but, rather, the standard deviation in actual time taken." Of course this notion applies as much today as it did then. Weinberg provides numerous, powerful insights throughout the text that have stood the test of time. He got it right then--and it is still right.

The book is well researched and contains many stories. All ring true and some made me laugh out loud. If you don't see a little of yourself in this book, you aren't a computer professional. Buy it, read it, and then leave it on your manager's chair. It will do both of you a world of good.

Condensed, highly quotable software wisdom. 0% redundancy!

What prompted me to buy and read this book was Steve McConnel's recommendation in Code Complete. After reading Psychology from cover to cover, I have become a Weinberg fan!
The book is a true jewel - not deficient, not redundant. Every sentence means a lot, and carries insight and pure wisdom. The book demands your utmost attention. Weinberg speaks with precision, simplicity, grace, and wisdom. I found myself quoting him very often! The anecdotes are memorable and relevant - you'll find yourself narrating them to others!
Things I liked most: The entire section on "Egoless Programming". The first three parts of the book are amazingly relevant, although the book has been written over 25 years back (I didn't even exist back then!)
Things I liked least: The last part "Programming Tools" seems to be the only part that's dated. It may be more meaningful to someoone who has experienced such tools and languages.
Now I look forward to reading Weinberg's other books, including "Becoming a Technical Leader", "The Secrets of Consulting", and the "Quality Software Management" series.

Good info on collaborations, but short on details and dated

This book has a wealth of information on how programmers work when in groups, and is a useful read for both managers and individual contributors alike. Many of the fuzzier, less-quantifiable people issues that affect programmers are covered well.
However, it really suffers in three ways:
- All of the examples and technology details are dated to the point of distraction.
- The typography appears to be photocopies of the original text, and really looks terrible. Couldn't they have reset it?
- Not a lot of concrete advice.

We know the shadow by many names: alter ego, lower self, the dark twin, repressed self, id. Carl Jung once said that the shadow "is the person you would rather not be." But even if you choose to hide your dark side, it will still cast a shadow, according to author Debbie Ford. Rather than reject the seemingly undesirable parts of ourselves, Ford offers advice on how to confront our shadows. The problem, as Ford (and Freud) define it, is that in growing up, people suppress those behaviors, thoughts, feelings and characteristics that are unacceptable within their particular environments. But rather than daily sessions on the couch, Ford advocates re-imagining and reclaiming lost aspects of self, urging readers to "unconceal" and embrace those traits buried in their "shadow," in order to find their "gift." Good Work

There is a story in Native American history of an Indian chief who one night talking to his tribe tells them there are two dogs inside his mind. One a white dog who is good and courageous, the other a black dog who is vengeful and spiteful.He tells the tribe the dogs are fighting to the death. A brave, not able to wait for the end of the story asks "Which one of them will win." The chief responds "The one I feed."
This book tells us how to feed the white dog. I loved the book. I would also highly recommend the book An Encounter With A Prophet.

Welcoming our "Bad" Side

Here's an unpleasant thought, for those of us who try so hard to be nice, spiritual, kind -- we have a dark side, too. Holding on to (hiding) our dark side is what keeps us from moving forward and making significant changes in our lives. Can't: get rid of the excess weight, stop ruining good relationships, getting into bad ones? You just might want to take a look at this book, find that dark side and use it to set you free.
One way to spot the dark side, according to Debbie Ford, in her excellent book, is to pay attention to our over-reactions. If you find yourself getting all worked up when someone accuses you of being something you just KNOW you're not, Ford tells us that that reaction means you're right on top of some important information.
You could go into psychotherapy to try and work it out. Or you could just get this book, and start embracing the darker side. You won't fall apart -- read it, do the exercises. This is a book you can read and follow alone, but it's also an excellent book to work on, or discuss, with a good friend or two.
Don't pass this one by, unless you're perfect!

MY FAVORITE BOOK!

I've read a lot of self-help books and this is by far the best I've ever read. It's not a book for everyone. Many people are not ready to look at themselves with total honesty. But, as the author explains, "What you can't be with, won't let you be." The things you deny about yourself will keep popping-up in your life, until you finally understand and accept them. As the author say so well "Because when we judge ourselves we automatically judge others. And what we do to others, we also do to ourselves. The world is a mirror of our internal selves. When we can accept ourselves, we automatically accept and forgive others."
The fascinating thing is, usually people that we dislike, are actually mirroring a quality that we are denying about ourselves. We have nearly every positive and negative quality there is, but through painful experiences, we come to deny certain parts of ourselves. We are unaware of how greatly this affects our life, and our interaction with other people.
We are also unaware of how wonderful life can be when we free ourselves. As she says "What you don't own, owns you." and "What you resist, persists." I can't do this book justice in this short review, but if you are ready to look at yourself with total honesty, and really change your life for the better, buy this book!

A book to refer back to again and again!

I can not say enough positive things about this outstanding book. As a child therapist, who works with many children in the foster care system and increasing numbers of adopted children, Theraplay has become the single most important tool in my repertoire of therapy modalities. It is very exciting to find a method of working with children that offers practical and impactful strategies to try, which are very different from what you may already be doing. I have also attended the Theraplay trainings at the Theraplay Institute in Chicago and am near completion of the Theraplay Certification process. Even if I am not using Theraplay with a particular child, the foundation and understanding of attachment that this model has given me pervade my work. Parents of children that I am using Theraplay with often report dramatic progress in their child's behavior and attachment to them in a short period of time. One father of an internationally adopted child that I am using Theraplay with said it best. He stated, "We finally came to realize that our child was not going to be able to fully benefit from all the supportive services we were taking him to (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy) until he was able to form an attachment with us. Theraplay has allowed that attachment to form and we are now seeing much more progress in other areas of development."
The model of using parents as co-therapists, as presented in the book, is very empowering to parents and the parents I use Theraplay with have many positive comments to say about this. One foster/adoptive mother recently told me she thinks that every foster or adoptive parent should be required to learn Theraplay. She adds "It has given me a whole new understanding of my adopted children and their needs."
Theraplay is not only useful for children with attachment and bonding difficulties, but I have found it particularly useful for children diagnosed with ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. This is a comprehensive book that you will refer back to again and again.

This book offers elegant solutions to complex problems.

Jernberg and Booth explore attachment beginning in the nursery, what it looks like when all goes well and when it doesn't. Difficult concepts are presented in ways that make them highly accessable. The beauty of this work, is in the solutions that are offered. As I read this book, I found my self saying repeatedly, "this make too much sense." After reading Theraplay, I registered for the next training offered in Chicago. Anyone working with children in most any capacity would benefit from this well researched, time-tested work. Reading this book and attending the training has had a tremendous, positive impact on my work as a child therapist.

Great book for foster parents

The book is written for professionals (social workers/psychologists) but as a foster parent I found the book well laid out and full of great, practical activities to foster bonding. The vignettes were enlightening and reaffirmed the importance of that special attachment.

About the Author
It was an accidental friendship if ever there was one. David Foster Wallace was at the center of late-20thcentury American literature, Bryan A. Garner at that of legal scholarship and lexicography. It was language that drew them together, and it was DFW who reached out to BAG. It was DFW who penned “Authority and American Usage,” the encomium to Garner’s dictionary of American usage. The 95- page essay appeared first in Harper’s in abridged form and in its full-length version in Consider the Lobster. It was an auspicious beginning for their friendship.

A quick read I am sure to come back to again

This is a transcript of an interview between Bryan Garner and David Foster Wallace. The original interview lasted less than 90 minutes, and won't take you as long to read. But I've just completed my first read, and I've highlighted so many nuggets that I am certain I will want to go back and re-read this a few more times. The conversation between Garner and Wallace is riveting - revealing as much about Wallace's thoughts on writing as it does his own peculiar personality.

One of many gems I enjoyed: After commenting about how he used to laugh with his mother about the ridiculousness of the phrase "Save up to 50% and more!" in a local advertisement, Wallace notes that it is "possible that [the phrase] has been shown statistically to increase your ability to memorize the 50%. The point is not that this is okay. I think it's damaging to the language as a beautiful thing, and to interhuman communication, but I've stopped thinking that it's just idiots who weren't paying attention in eighth grade and don't know how to do this stuff."

I am grateful that Garner has provided us with this wonderful interview. Complete with its heartfelt introduction, it is a great addition to Wallace's legacy. One can only hope Garner takes Wallace up on his suggestion to write Garner's Dictionary of Dialectal English Usage: "[A]dvertising English, bureaucratic English, corporate English, hipster English . . . because I will bet that just trying to figure out some of the codes and motives behind them would just be fascinating." If he does, there is no doubt about the book's dedication.

Insightful Wisdom from One of Modern History's Best Writers

I am a DF Wallace-alholic, so any book that promulgates David's wisdom is, to me, a must-read. This is a must-read.

Setting that aside, though, I would also consider this a must-read for anyone who wants to be an impactful writer. Dave's insights on what makes for effective writing are based on many years of his writing novels and nonfiction pieces that opened our minds in new ways, made us laugh, made is think, and sometimes scared us stiff. His key insight is one you have probably heard from him before: write for the reader and respect who you are writing for. Even though I had heard these chunks of wisdom from him before, it is still worth the price of the book to have them packed into the transcript of an interview in which the interviewer is none other than Bryan Garner. Bryan asked Great questions. David provided Superb answers.

This is a quick read, so quick that you could, as I did, initially conclude that this has the highest cost per word of any book you've ever purchased. The type is fairly big (not uncomfortably so) and the transcript format is such that the text on a typical page takes up not much more than half the page. When I first thought about this, I thought, Well, Garner *is* a lawyer, after all. But then I decided who cares? I got everything out of the book I could hope for AND Garner is giving all the proceeds from the book to The Harry Ranson Center, which houses the DFW library. So now, after thinking it through, my purchase was an investment, not a cost. (Also, Garner is very big on selecting a typography that is reader-friendly, and it turns out that a relatively large text with relatively narrow content field is the best typography.)

buy it, read it, love it

Dfw met Gardner when he was working on a story on American usage. Years later they did a short radio piece together discussing the same followed by a video taped interview by Gardner in 2006. This is a short read because the transcript is a conversation of 67 minutes with a short preface where Gardner relates the extent of their relationship. It's an interesting read for me being a fan of dfw and having read his other interviews to gain another facet of the man. dfw is a snoot, eh passionate about grammar and usage and his conversation Gardner shows how deeply he thinks about it and the kind of quiet joy he gets from exploring it. The conversation is varied but they touch briefly but deeply on why written language is convoluted and bogged down, what it really means when we say a piece has flow, why it's important to write clearly, the vicissitudes of new wording, and strategies to write better, among other things. While I am familiar with a lot of these things because I have read the 90 page essay dfw wrote on usage that much is reprised on this take, I still take joy in being able to pick his brain and see what he cares about academically and how he deals with his challenges in writing. It's a small gem, pick it up and enjoy. It's expensive for the length but take comfort all profits goes to maintaining his archives held in the library university.

Alright but not the same.

My workplace has the 6th edition of this book, I bought the eighth thinking I receive the same but that was not the case. While it does provide summaries of almost everything it really cuts out the meaty part of what made O'Hara's book so special. Plus for the "new" stuff it's a bunch of references to look at no summary attached. I felt cheated with this purchase.
