A stunning success of horror fiction ... moodily evocative and disturbingly macabre!

Wytches: Volume 1 chills like an icy whisper of wind across the back of your neck as you walk alone through a dark forest. Atmospheric and original … author Scott Synder’s script unleashes a dark, earthy terror that is both new – yet primal – while artists Jock and Hollinsworth deliver a motion picture-like experience from the cheery to grainy grim – the splotched watercolor effect feeling like old celluloid and reminiscent of the found footage style of horror film-making.

The opening pages are disturbingly visceral – in terms of both the primeval setting and on the human relational level – and you should be completely hooked (and uneasy) by end of the first scene. And while the opening chapters of Wytches threaten to be an impossible jigsaw of the macabre, Synder wisely hammers the ghoulish and gruesome into order, developing a mature (and amazingly heartfelt) story, where all the pieces fit. This is mythos building, and Synder’s creature designs (and their black symbiosis with humanity) is reminiscent of the monster-making Bram Stroker did in Dracula complete with a Van Helsing-esque opposition. Wytches hits that same vein, introducing a new terror to the genre ... that, at the same time, also seems like it’s a horror that has actually been around for a very, very long time, lurking on the borders of the human subconscious, waiting for some intrepid soul to give it name and give it form.

Everything about this book is so good … from the warped designs of the monsters to the amazingly well-developed characters … even the trade-dress is well done, with the full-page covers of the monthly comics acting as chapter dividers. It is also, probably, one of those comic series that reads best as a collection rather than in single issues … where the mood and twisty-turny plotting is uninterrupted and delivered all at once … like a blockbuster movie. And like the best movies – while the door is certainly open for sequels -- Wytches also stands alone as a self-contained masterpiece.

I read Wytches at night, in a cabin in the woods, when the rain fell heavily. It is a book best saved for those types of nights, when the shadows of the trees play across the walls of your bedroom and you hope – you pray – that those noises you hear -- chit-chit-chit -- is just branches scraping glass.

Extremely creepy!

Damn, Scott Snyder is a creepy dude! Nah, honestly he tells an amazingly creepy story accentuated by Jock's strong artwork. The story centers on this strange version of the classic witch tale and a family dealing with this insane world. At times the story goes back in forth in reality and time which can cause confusion. I also wish the story was in black and white because the colors seem overpowering in certain panels. Overall, a very good book.

Great read but art makes story difficult to follow sometimes

Very well written, great story and an interesting take on witches. Art work is also great. Only complaint is that, not the drawings but the coloring is sometimes this weird splash of light. The art makes the story hard to follow sometimes because it's hard to tell what is going on when the drawings are obscured by these weird dark and light splashes that seem like they are meant to give a horror movie tone.

I really enjoyed this novel

I don't usually leave long reviews, but hey...

To start off with, I really enjoyed this novel! It was precisely what I've been looking for (consensual father/son romance with all the emotions that entails rather than a quick smutty short). If you are looking for the smutty short variety, you won't find that in this book. That's all good. Take a chance on it anyway! Another thing that I really liked was that it dealt with the real challenges a relationship like this would face without assuming that the relationship is doomed or tawdry. It has a happy ending (which is very important to me) and sequels promised, so I really hope that those end happily as well. (As an aside, I wish the author had a mailing list to help me keep track of when the next one comes out.)

One big thing that detracts from this book (not enough to knock off a star point, but just in general) is the cover. I almost passed it by because of the illustrated cover that does not fit genre expectations.

Beautiful

I know a lot of people will not like this book due to the incest, but I have to say this was a very beautiful story. I was honestly rooting for Andrew and Kevin to work out as a couple, they were just so perfectly in tune with one another and it was very touching. The love they grew into as father and son and then partners was so beautifully written.

Some Needed Drama but Some UnNeeded Scenes.....Disappointed Problem/Resolution

Warning, a few possible Spoilers:
So there's a few things I liked about this story, such as it truly being an m/m, and it being incest as it was described. I have read another m/m that later changed it's mind and decided a DNA test was false. But that's something else. The main characters are Andrew (teen) and Kevin (father), who meet for the first time after a fight with Andrew's mom lands him on Kevin's doorstep. From a reader's stand point, I would have liked to see or learn whatever happened with the relationship with Andrew's mother. I know the author claimed that she cut him out of her life but there was no true backstory to it in details that would show her 17 years of raising him just made her call it quits one day. As much of a flake or demanding mother she may have been, I just don't see how she'd never enter either of their lives again.

I want to question the author's origin as well. The book is suppose to take place in New York, and I'm not claiming the author needs to be from there, but using metric system forms of measurement really stood out because I can honestly say I had no clue how dramatically far the author was trying to make something when they switched to that, because, New York....Another few things I felt could really improve upon the book was I felt the author rushed the last 20% of it. There were so many details, thoughts, little actions and just story in the first 80% that took many pages to describe, but the author I felt rushed through the problem, solution, and ending at the end. Along with that rushed, glaze over detail feeling, there also seemed to be less editing and more grammar errors compared to the rest of the book. One of the most confusing things the author would do was jump between what each character thought in the same paragraph, and jumping characters isn't the issue but doing so without a paragraph separation had me pause many times.

Andrew, I liked the development and behavior he displayed as it felt compelling. Kids act impulsive, needy, and dramatic which is acting on many times. What confused me however is the book went from them meeting, claimed several weeks went by, then Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, so when we arrive in January I'm mathematically thinking they have been learning about each other since at least October....but author claims only 2 months, several times. I also feel the whole Thanksgiving scene was a waste as the author never dived deeper into the grandmother's relationship with her son or grandson, and I would have rather seen a more developed "problem-that-a-rises" if nothing about this chapter added to the story, which I felt it didn't.

Kevin is suppose to be 35, which to me means he knocked up his girlfriend at the age of 16, author keeps forgetting women are pregnant for 9 months as many references are made that Kevin helped make Andrew 17 years ago...which leads me to my next question. When did Andrew turn 18? One minute at a concert he can't get in because he wont turn 18 for a couple months, and like a few chapters later with no skipped time frame described he is 18. I would find it hard to believe Kevin wouldn't have done something to celebrate that, so....I'm still not sure if he was 17 or 18 at the end.....And if Kevin is 35, which was consistent throughout the book, and as good look and good of shape as constantly said to be, why then was he always referred to as looking old? Maybe that's my age creeping up, perhaps to Andrew he can be both....

Ben, oh how that character ticks me off. I don't understand where the author was going with this character. Sweet and caring in the beginning, easily angered when denied what he wants to the point of ending a friendship, then apologizes and is just as quickly forgiven after the cold shoulder directed at Andrew. I can maybe understand that drama, and Andrew being way too nice in forgiving that in a budding relationship (friends for like max 2 months here). But what I fail to understand is their next fight, the Christmas presents. I can't grasp how a band that gives signed VIP tickets to Kevin directly wouldn't have made sure that Kevin and Andrew could get in the concert. I don't understand how Ben completely jumped into being an enemy because Andrew wasn't available to go to a surprise 18+ concert to begin with. Who springs tickets on something like that in high school without making sure they are even allowed to attend? And then gets made when the last minute plans don't pan out because the other person already is going? Dude...plan better, but no....he just turns completely, 100% into a complete.......yeah......which I just don't get. AND THEN....after a brawl they become friends again? Okay, clearly I don't understand guys I guess because that quick make up and forgiveness scene of Ben putting together all the pieces of his behavior in the matter of minutes with an adrenaline rush totally made me want to join in on the punch swings.

All-in-all, it was a good story, very well developed with great characters. I feel a little brushing up on Kevin into actually acting like the adult the author claims he is would make him a stronger, rounder, character but otherwise he was good. Andrew seems pretty spot on and fully developed, but I feel Kyle and Ben had some work as supporting characters, as there's many holes in their personalities (Ben maybe is bipolar?). Lastly, I feel some areas could have been removed to make space for a better detailed climax of the book. So basically, an editor and this would be golden.

Simply Amazing! Mind Boggling

On a breezy Sunday afternoon, I happened to read "The Death Of Vishnu" by Manil Suri. I picked up this book with great trepidation. Also, on the personal front, who would like to read about a man dying? That's what I thought until I read this one. As the title goes, the narrative also comes directly to the point - that of Vishnu, an odd job man, laying dead on an apartment landing of Mumbai. This is where the crux of the story lies.
Here we meet the Pathaks and the Asranis, two arch rival neighbours; what's worse is that they share the same kitchen and each claims to be taking care of Vishnu better.
Then on the other hand there are the Jalals - the husband who doesn't believe in any religion and just wants to gain spiritualism the easy way; the son Salim who is madly in love with the Asranis' daughter Kavita (here comes the Hindu-Muslim divide).
Not to forget the Tanejas - Vinod Taneja whose wife's death has left him with so much grief that he just doesn't get out of his apartment anymore...
And what's surprising is that all these characters are intertwined with one. And the connecting factor: Vishnu! The story binds itself based on what others perceive Vishnu to be - his mother, the Pathaks, the Jalals, the Asranis, Padmini, Kavita, and others like the scavenger and the sweeper working in the apartment. There is a holistic perspective to the point that it infringes on who Vishnu really is and what he embodies for all the bystanders.
There is a singular thread running through the book - that of isolation on various levels. The Pathaks and Asranis share a kitchen, almost to the point of invading each other's privacy and yet are so distant and cold. Vishnu is dead and yet no one wants to claim him and take him to the nearest morgue. Her husband and son, seeking refuge in intellectualism and staunch belief, leave Mrs Jalal alone.
Vishnu in another realm altogether believes that he is God (or rather is made to believe that by Mr Jalal) - Vishnu, who had ten reincarnations. His love for... Padmini, his longing for Kavita, and his thoughts on living make the book one delicious course.
This book is not an easy read. There are layers and sub-layers to this course though. On the surface, things are quite simple and easy to understand, but what Mr Suri has created is something else. He has created what one might call "a quilt of emotions" - right from love to the isolation one feels in the metropolis to the bare human nature. In short, Manil Suri has created a Universe in an apartment of Bombay - a city so huge and yet so cold and distant. So uninviting.
The spiritualism as one would expect from this book is on many levels rather ambiguous and unclear. In the sense that while the author tries to portray the elements of reincarnation and giving up on worldly pleasures - like Mr Jalal often tries doing - it all is actually a mockery of the same. One of the redeeming features of the book is that it is not written from an outsider's perspective. It is carved by an Indian living in India and breathing the air, which was what Vishnu did. An ordinary man elevated to something extraordinary to satisfy the superstitions and religious notions of the upper notches of society. This is where the element of comedy throws itself in your face.
The prose is certainly clever; however, the ending is left hanging. Possibly the author expects the reader to decide that for himself. In many ways, this resembles a grand chorus from a huge and wonderful comic opera, with all the inhabitants of the building singing at once. And underneath all the voices wailing about their personal concerns is the insistent bass of Vishnu as he prepares to die. Dealing with the most basic aspects of religion, love, and human kindness in a city setting which challenges its inhabitants to the limit, Suri creates a warm, funny, and very human drama of a every man's search for meaning in life.
Suri writes with obvious affection about a Bombay perhaps already lost, evoking easily its moods and attitudes, its light and smells. One can almost feel the heavy evening sea breeze, taste the roasted peanuts sold in paper cones along the sea wall, or see the Maharaja looking down from the Air India hoarding. A Bombay that rings true with its Irani Cafe, cigarettewalla, and radiowalla. Manil Suri's sharp eye for detail and natural ability to create a strong sense of place and time define his considerable talent, and one can look forward with a certain assuredness to its maturing in his promised books on the other two Gods of the Hindu trinity, Brahma and Shiva.

Fabulous

The Death of Vishnu has become one of my absolute favorite novels. Although some reviews have called its characters a representative microcosm of India, I believe the message is much simpler and much broader than that. This is a book about human nature, in all its ugliness and glory. The characters are superbly well drawn--sometimes they come across as despicable, other times sympathetic, but they are always heartbreakingly real. Watch how all thier seemingly altruistic acts have selfish human motives behind them and you will recognize yourself. One of the nicest things about this book is the odd little quirks that Manil Suri gives his characters. Mr. Jalal (my favorite) trying to burn himself with pink candles in order to achieve spiritual enlightment, Mrs. Pathak serving kraft cheese as a foreign delicacy, Kavita's obsession with Hindi films, Sheetal's dying wish to make it into the Guiness Book of World Records...and of course Vishnu, who starts to wonder if he might be god. It's a rich tapestry, and so very different from anything I've ever read before...Despite the aimless nature of the plot, the novel still built up a great deal of suspense at the end, and unlike most supposedly "suspenseful" stories I honestly had no idea how everything was going to turn out. And when I finally finished it I was left with a greater understanding of how human beings can be so horrible in so many little ways. I believe this is a book everyone would benefit from reading, not just people specifically interested in India or Indian fiction. However, it should be noted that there is a great deal of Hindu mythology in this book. Being Indian myself I was familiar with most of it, but other readers might want to get a little background information beforehand.

A Quiet Flash of Brilliance!

Difficult to believe - that this is a first novel! Manil Suri has chosen a theme both timeless and extraordinarily unique as he sculpts the life of a dying man (the proces is not morbid, just a fine substrate for weaving a tale) through the overheard conversations of the folk living in the boarding house on whose steps he lies. In many ways this short novel is like extending that flash of light when all of our life appears before us just at the moment of death - extending it long enough to relish the myriad aspects of living. This is a last gasp...but filled with so much treasure that you'll find yourself hoping it never ends. Suri's writing style is unfettered, concise, colorful, and always maintains a simplicity of style that begs for revisiting. An auspicious debut. Highly recommended.
