Great intro into Petroleum Fiscal systems

I just started working at an Oil and Gas Company and was lent this book on day 1. Its a fantastic book for using as an intro into the subject. Very easy to take in. I got a copy for myself.

An excellent practical tool.

This book is an excellent practical tool to gain understanding on how the Production Sharing Contracts/ Agreements of the international oil industry work and how the negotiations on PSA normally flow. Johnston does not concentrate on cultural aspects of a particular country, but rather on the mechanics of the PSA and its major issues. The topics that Johnston covers are "Petroleum Fiscal Systems," "Concessionary Systems," "Production Sharing Contracts," "Risk Service Contracts," "Threshold Field Size Analysis," "Global Market for Exploration Acreage," "Production Sharing Contract Outline" "Accounting Principles," and "Double Taxation." This introductory comprehensive overview of PSA concepts is written in a clear and understandable manner so that even a person without a background in accounting, taxation, and oil engineering is able to understand the author's explanations and conclusions. This source will be most helpful to consult if one is interested in learning or simply clarifying the concepts of exploration economics, oil taxation, contract/fiscal terms, and PSA negotiations in the international context.

Essential reading for anyone interested in the oil industry and resource economics

I first read this book in 1996 and consider it to be the most useful book I have ever read on the oil industry. If you want to understand the basics of resource economics, risk sharing and rent sharing (taxes vs profits), no book will serve you better.
Don't be put off by the fact that the book was published in 1994 (and as far as I can tell, has not been updated since). This is a book about core principcles that works as well in a $100/bbl as a $10/bbl world.

Watch out for that Second Cognition, it's a doozy!

A good book for the novice or those that have just begun their Spiritual Path. Even though it is book five, it really should be book number one as it sort of gently breaks you into some of the information about working in Spirit. However, there is no fluff here. It is not rainbows and fluffy clouds. No. She gets down to business right away. Some may be put off by some of her opinions and statements and may have to put it down for a while. But you will find yourself picking it up later, if not sooner. Of all of the books that are about this particular subject, the one thing that the author Mrs. Endall Beall does here is pretty significant. She breaks it down for you. She will make you question your beliefs and things that you have been (and I have been, as I was baptised and raised catholic) "programmed" to believe. And, yes. I mean "programmed." Like a computer. Some may not like her writings about Reiki. Be warned. But hear her out. There is a method to her madness. If you have a legitimate question or argument,she even gives you a place to contact her to discuss subjects further. I appreciate her candor and her wit and primarily her willingness to share her own misadventures in her own Spiritual Journey; Even when she seems to contradict herself. 1. She usually catches herself. 2. There is a reason, i.e. she has gotten more information.
What I really appreciate is that this information that I have been recieving for some time now and it feels rather nice to have some of it validated. Just give it a shot. You will see what I mean.
There is also a tremendous amount of insight into what is happening in and around the world today and how to deal with it. Good stuff. I am going to read it again and if I have further insight (which I am sure I will), I will add to this review. Enjoy.

This book is awesome in giving first hand experiences & profound information about being an empath & energy work! Mrs. Beall has given a thoughtful & easy to understand these complicated systems of energy & their effects. Being an empath myself I have searched for 30 plus years looking for explanations & guidance into spiritual energy growth & I found it with this book! The whole series is wonderful & choc full of valuable information regarding the truth of why we are here. I strongly suggest anyone who is an empath & or involved in energy work read this incredible book filled with valueable information that is necessary to avoid the pitfalls of ignorance in this area. Don't be fooled thinking that you know everything about energy, this book gives you the facts & the correct information needed to move forward with your work in energy.

"I wouldn't know, Johnnie. I don't know what it's like to be dead."

Modesty Blaise's good friend John Dall can't understand why Modesty insists on risking her life to try to save the life of a person with an incurable and debilitating mental problem. "You really think he's better off alive?" he asks Modesty.

"I wouldn't know, Johnnie. I don't know what it's like to be dead," replies Modesty.

That's good enough for me. :-)

"I, Lucifer" (1967) is the third book in the Modesty Blaise series of action thrillers written by Peter O'Donnell back in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. This is a series of books that I really love, and you may wish to take a look at my "So You'd Like To" guide here at Amazon.com about reading books by Peter O'Donnell.

Although I love this series of books I've decided to only give four stars to "I, Lucifer". The reason is that the supernatural plays a very important role in the story, and I'm too much of a skeptic to believe in such things. In addition, a major coincidence occurs that also reduces the believability of the plot in my mind.

The bad guys are always a major element in a Modesty Blaise story. In "I, Lucifer" we meet Seff and his wife Regina, two elderly puppeteers who turned to crime when they could no longer find work due to the closure of the vaudeville theaters. Unlikely villains, but they are described as being so evil that one feels a chill running down one's back.

Seff and his wife have developed a diabolical way of threatening people and demanding protection money. But they happened to have René Vaubois (a friend of Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin) on their list of targets, and he refused to pay when threatened. And René happens to be together with Modesty and Willie when a gang tries to kill him, to set an example for the other targets.

This is the start of a long and complicated story. First Modesty and Willie have to find the bad guys, then they suffer a major setback, and then we are led to the exciting final confrontation.

The high point in this book, in my opinion, is when Modesty and Willie are forced to fight a duel to the death against each other. Of course, I can't reveal what happens, but as usual Peter O'Donnell has created a story with many twists and surprises. And, as usual, the very special relationship between Modesty and Willie is an important and appealing part of the book.

This book introduces Stephen Collier, a recurring figure in several of the later Modesty Blaise books. I have mixed feelings about Stephen Collier, and am never really sure about what it is that Modesty sees in him.

One final point I'll mention is that the paperback edition of this book contains a couple of typographical errors not present in the original hardcover edition. Amazing as it sounds in our post-PC era, the text of books must have been manually re-entered back then when a book was copied from hardcover to paperback.

In conclusion, a great Modesty Blaise adventure, but not one of my favorites because of the emphasis on a certain supernatural ability of one of the characters in the story.

Nobody does it better!

I'm a long-time big-time fan of the Modesty Blaise books. O'Donnell does a nifty job of combining action/adventure with humor and drama. This title is my sentimental favorite probably because this is the one in which the recurring character of sharp-witted, self-professed coward Stephen Collier is introduced. Collier is the Everyman we can identify with, who allows us as readers to partake of the action and observe Modesty and sidekick Willie Garvin's antics without pretending in any way to be their peer. Like Collier the reader is a passenger on this wild caper - you may hold your breath at times and burst out laughing at others. This book has all the hallmarks of a Blaise/Garvin outing: Ingenious villains, a Garvin girl story, wit, wonderfully detailed combat sequences -- if you've never read a Modesty Blaise book, no need to begin at the beginning because this book easily stands on its own and is thrilling enough to induce you to read the others.

Best of a good series

I loved the Modesty Blaise tales when they came out in the Sixties and seventies. All were good. I loved the interaction between Modesty and Willie. (By the way, anyone else notice the similarities with Skilly and Two-knife in Jerry Pournelle's stories of Falkenberg's Legion?) The other characters, including Modesty's and Garvin's love interests, were also interesting and well drawn, (although some of Willie's girls were a bit over the top). I Lucifer has one of the more interesting plots; a young man who can predict death with almost 90% accuracy, and thinks he is Satan, and the villains who take control of him for monetary gain. O'Donnell always had good villains for Modesty and Willie to foil, and this tale takes all their wits and skills. A good action spy-thriller with a horror/occult twist...

The ASM Handbook, Volume 6, Welding, Brazing, and Soldering, has been organized into a unique format that we believe will provide Handbook users with ready access to needed materials-oriented joining information at a minimal level of frustration and study time. When we developed the organizational structure for this Volume, we recognized that engineers, technicians, researchers, designers, students, and teachers do not seek out joining information with the same level of understanding, or with the same needs. Therefore, we established distinct sections that were intended to meet the specific needs of particular users.

The experienced joining specialist can turn to the Section "Consumable Selection, Procedure Development, and Practice Considerations" and find detailed joining materials data on a well-defined problem. This Handbook also provides guidance for those who not only must specify the joining practice, but also the materials to be joined. The Section "Materials Selection for Joined Assemblies" contains comprehensive information about the properties, applications, and weldabilities of the major classes of structural materials. Together, these two major sections of the Handbook should provide an engineer assigned a loosely defined design problem with the means to make intelligent choices for completing an assembly.

Frequently, technologists are called upon to initiate and adopt welding processes without in-depth knowledge of these processes or the scientific principles that impact the properties and performance of weldments. About the Author
Coverage of joining technologies in the ASM Handbook has grown dramatically over the years. A short chapter on welding--equal in size to about 5 pages of today's ASM Handbook--appeared in the 1933 Edition of the National Metals Handbook published by the American Society of Steel Treaters, ASM's predecessor. That material was expanded to 13 pages in the classic 1948 Edition of Metals Handbook. The first full volume on welding and brazing in the series appeared in 1971, with publication of Volume 6 of the 8th Edition of Metals Handbook. Volume 6 of the 9th Edition, published in 1983, was expanded to include coverage of soldering.

The new Volume 6 of the ASM Handbook builds on the proud tradition established by these previous volumes, but it also represents a bold new step for the series. The Handbook has not only been revised, but also entirely reformatted to meet the needs of today's materials community. Over 90% of the articles in this Volume are brand-new, and the remainder have been substantially revised. More space has been devoted to coverage of solid-state welding processes, materials selection for joined assemblies, welding in special environments, quality control, and modeling of joining processes, to name but a few. Information also has been added for the first time about joining of selected nonmetallic materials.

While a deliberate attempt has been made to increase the amount of cutting-edge information provided, the organizers have worked hard to ensure that the heart of the book remains practical information about joining processes, applications, and materials weldability--the type of information that is the hallmark of the ASM Handbook series.

You really should have this if you are in quality/welding of any kind. Wonderful giant-ass resource book filled with too much information. Need to know preheat of 8630 or 4140? It's in here. Need help figuring out why the weld broke? It's in here. Pick up a copy.
