This text is a primer for the economic analysis of medical markets and the production of health. It traces the economic rationale and development of the medical care organization. The first thirteen chapters use a "flow of funds" approach to describe the incentives and organizational structure of the health care system. Transactions between patients and physicians (and other) are examined to see how profits are made, costs covered, contracts written (or implied), and regulations formed. The continuing evolution of the system in the U.S. is the subject of two chapters on managed care. The last seven chapters take a wider macroeconomic perspective in order to explore the dynamics of change within the health care system, and to explicitly consider determinants of national health spending and the role of governments in public and private health.

The perfect introduction to health care economics.

I wrote a paper on managed care competition for an economics course. This book proved invaluable. Without any previous knowledge of health economics, I was able to read, learn, and understand a fairly complex subject in a short amount of time using this book. The text covers everything but remains at an undergrad level. The arguments and examples are simple, clear, interesting, and easy to remember. I definitely found this to be the best introduction and overview to health economics, after having read six or seven books on the subject.

Solid, even-handed treatment of a touchy subject

I am currently reading this book for an online course I am taking, and I am very impressed. It is well-reasoned, seeks to look at all perspectives objectively and avoids the trap of taking sides in the current healthcare debate. While the subject matter is by no means easy, the book is nonetheless highly accessible and engaging. it is a great reference. However

NOTE: this rating is towards the seller, not the book. This is a classic text, as such, it is a great reference. However, the version I purchased is clearly an off-print, despite the seller's claim that the material is officially licenced by Wiley. Multiple pages are miss-printed, duplicated and/or potentially missing.

Always the best!

As the Faure's 1986 2nd version being the 'classic' isotope textbook for geology, this book improved from the older version by adding new materials and new references.
It covers all of the important isotopes for geologic use including their basic geochemistry. Faure and Mensing explain everything clearly. All of the materials are nicely arranged and well written.
The only issue here is that there are many typos you can find if you read carefully.
I would recommond this book to geologists at all levels!

I'm pretty sure that this is the best book on isotope geology. It gives you insights not only on igneous and metamaorphic rocks, but also on sedimentary rocks, with informations that usualy lack in many other books. I consider this product an obligatory reading for anyone interested in isotope geology.

This book is an excellent collection of one-liners. Unlike many joke books, over 90% of its jokes are actually funny! There's a good indexing system as well. Though admittedly there's no entry for jokes on bicycles.

Pretty good quote book

The print is small and the paper is not of the best quality (this is a paperback edition) and the contents are very much like those of the Oxford Dictionalry of Humorous Quotations, indeed, quite often the same ones, but I enjoy reading it and it is not very heavy at all.

Talking to the pretentious literati or author, you get to say: "A good writer is not, per se, a good critic. No more than a good drunk is automatically a good bartender..." If he replies: "Critics are like eunuchs in a harem: they know how it's done, they've seen it done every day, but they're unable to do it themselves" then you can say: "I never read a book before reviewing it- it prejudices a man so...." and then add: "Thank you for sending me a copy of your book. I'll waste no time in reading it..."

About the Author
Thomas L. Pangle holds the Joe R. Long Chair in Democratic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His many acclaimed publications include The Ennobling of Democracy: The Challenge of the Postmodern Age and Political Philosophy and the God of Abraham, both published by Johns Hopkins. He has also published a number of translations of Platonic dialogues, including The Laws of Plato and The Roots of Political Philosophy: Ten Forgotten Socratic Dialogues.

Charles E. Butterworth is Emeritus Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland. He is the author or translator of many books, including The Political Writings: "Selected Aphorisms" and Other Texts by Alfarabi, also from Cornell.

Alfarabi has a lot to say in this book. You can spend days analyzing brief passages, but getting to the core of what Farabi is saying is no easy task. Perhaps the greatest success of this book is just getting its reader to really think and putting him in a state of wonder.

This is one of the best books I have ever read on prayer in general and on the prayer of the heart- the Jesus Prayer.
The book is based on the writings of two great russian Saints of the nineteenth century. Anyone who is looking for the inner Kingdom shall purchase this book.
