Best book on the history of Blue and White China

I read this book, cover to cover back in the mid 1980's. I even made notes, which I can no longer find.

In doing research on the history of porcelain, this book tops my list for Blue& White. For years I have not been able to track it down, but now I see it advertised in Victoria Magazine ! I feel as though I have found an old friend...who has now become famous...Voila!

Blue and White Heaven

This is a beautiful book, and the cover alone draws in us blue-and-white fanatics of the world. It is an important book as well, in the world of learning about, collecting, and appreciating our favorite china. We need all the help we can get (!), and this book should be the first one we buy to start a library on the subject.
I would recommend it to anyone whose dreams -- and shelves -- are filled with blue and white.

The text is designed to enable those concerned with either vine or fruit problems to arrive at considered diagnoses. The grape and allied industries should welcome the updating of the major portion of the book. Here the emphasis is on modern practices in vineyard management in arid and semi-arid regions—with special reference to California. Full and detailed treatment is provided or propagation, supports, training young vines, pruning, cultivation and chemical weed control, irrigation, soil management, diseases and pests, and harvesting, packing and storage.

The practices recommended in the book are based on the extensive research conducted in California and elsewhere by the authors and their distinguished colleagues. Examples of practices based on experiments are: methods of propagation which by-pass the usual one-year-in-the-vine-nursery; pruning as related to leaf area and time of leaf functioning, and its effect on berry set and fruit development; virus disease control through thermotherapy and soil fumigation; pests held in check by sanitary, chemical, and biological procedures; irrigation practices as related to soil texture. Tissue analyses are employed as guidelines indicating the mineral deficiencies or excesses of vines. Machine harvesting of raisins (with cane cutting) and some wine grape varieties with problems are described.

The regional recommendations for table and raisin varieties are based on log years of observations, while those for wine grapes are the results of studies of the interrelation of variety and the heat summation of the different climatic areas.

A standard reference but. . .

I have no regrets buying General Viticulture. It is, after all, a standard reference. But in many ways it is now a lttle outdated and modern experience and advice is lacking. It should therefore be considered a important part, but only a part, of the basic library of anyone doing or contemplating viticulture.
The academic style of writing does not lend itself to the "do-it-yourself" approach. The section on laying out a vineyard, for example, is more academic than practical, at least in my opinion. A more modern book would, of course, have better photographs and graphics, and this is what I miss most.

An indepth approach to Viticulture, but getting outdated.

I got the book "General Viticulture" originally back in 1977. I've looked at it recently at some better book stores. It is a powerhouse of information, there is no doubt, but unfortunately, it has not been updated in some time. Another drawback to the book is it's lack of grape culture outside the "California" scene. There are some new strides in viticulture going on in the midwest, and north east that are not even remotely covererd. The training systems and specifics of the NEWER American hybrids, with works from Elmer Swenson, David MacGregor, Dr. Tony Bell, Dr. Peter Hemstad of the University of Minnesota, to name a few is not even mentioned. I rated it 4 stars for it's excellent overview of just about every Vinifera, it's characteristic and management, especially related to California and similar climates around the world. It is still a great refernece book, just needs to be revised sometime.

Excellent general overview of viticulture

Although this book could use an update, it is an
excellent general reference on U.S. grape growing
practices and common problems, written by experts in the field. It is a well written technical book with many black and white photos and a good bibliography. I found the style very readable and not too difficult for a novice to follow, though some sections (e.g. the section about diseases) needed a little extra time. A must for anyone seriously thinking of putting in a vinyard.

Reads like a first draft

Reads like a first draft. The pacing is all over the place, made worse by jarring transitions and overwhelming info dumps. The use of "you" to refer to Sael is the sort of kitschy trick that might have worked if better executed, but as is, it's off putting and gimmicky. Speaking of Sael, she's some sort of disturbing cross between a manic pixie dream girl, a Mary Sue (which is a term often overused to diminish female characters and not one I use lightly) and an adolescent boy's fantasy girlfriend. Awkwardly formal dialogue clashes with cheesy one-liners, and the prose jumps back and forth between unnecessarily complex and overly colloquial. The premise reads like someone threw a bunch of fantasy and scifi tropes into a hat and picked out a bunch at random. Melding scifi and fantasy can work, but it here it feels contrived and overdone. I only read the first part of the sample offered by Amazon, so maybe it takes a 360 later on, but even if it does I don't know how people kept reading long enough to get there. This needed a good beta read and at least a couple of rewrites.

Great read!

I loved this book! I'm an avid reader, mostly of murder/mystery novels but fantasy/sci-fi comes a close second in genres for me. I was fascinated by the worlds created and described in the book and I loved the characters, even if they did act a little cheesy at times! Just added to the story in my opinion. I recommend this book to everyone!

This was a good book to use and read for that 1st course in the counseling major. Gives good info. on the areas of counseling so that you have a better insight to what the job requires. Helped me with my class and its requirements.

Gladding's Book Lives up to its Title

Samuel Gladding writes an informative book for new counselors called, "Counseling - A Comprehensive Profession." He begins his book with an overview of the historical and professional foundations of counseling. He outlines trends of counseling before 1900 and brings it all the way up to when the book was published in 2007. I enjoyed reading about the highlights of the history of counseling and examining how the profession has changed over time.

Gladding then goes into the personal and professional aspects of counseling and discusses the necessary personality and background of an effective counselor. I was surprised to learn that some counselors go into the profession for the wrong reasons. Some of these who are attracted to the counseling profession appear to have personality and adjustment problems (Gladding, 2007). Other reasons some may go into the field include: emotional distress, vicarious coping, loneliness, isolation, a desire for power, a need for love, or rebellion. I actually really had to examine my own personal motivation for going into the field and make sure that I had the personal qualities of an effective counselor.

Those qualities include: an ability to listen, empathy, understanding, tolerance of intimacy, comfort with power, and an ability to laugh (Gladding, 2007). The author also talked about how to maintain effectiveness as a counselor by going through counseling yourself and engaging in personally fulfilling activities in order to avoid burnout. I think these ideas are important for all professions and they have challenged me to continue personal therapy and daily exercise and mediation so I can maintain my own sense of well being.

Gladding also goes into the ethical and legal aspects of counseling and discusses the differences between the various codes of ethics. This was interesting to read and compare and contrast. I also enjoyed learning about ethics in specific counseling situations.

This book also went into the counseling process and theories. Gladding discussed how to build a counseling relationship with empathy, non-verbal behavior, and effective listening. He went over counselor skills such as: leading, immediately, humor, confrontation, and rehearsal. The book gave a great deal of essential vocabulary and definitions important to the field: counter transference, transference, follow-up, referrals, etc.

Gladding gave a brief overview of each of the theories: psychoanalytic, Adlerian, Humanistic, Behavioral, Cognitive, and Brief therapy. While these were not extensive by any means, they did give an overview and were helpful in understanding the whole picture and where different theories were coming from.

Finally, Gladding ended his book with a discussion of career counseling and different options available. He spent time on the family life and family cycle within marriage and family counseling. He also spent time on elementary, middle, and secondary school counseling in a government facility. This chapter was important to me because I currently work in a school setting and am interested in counseling students in a that type of mode. Finally, he discusses substance abuse counseling and mental health and community counseling.

Gladding's book, Counseling - A Comprehensive Profession was a great overview for the counseling profession. I enjoyed all different aspects and ideas. His book was challenging and made me really evaluate my own ideas, where I was coming from, and what I would like to do in the future. It gave me enough information in many different areas that I found what I was interested in and what I would like to research further. I recommend this book to all those interested in going into the counseling profession.

Online Counseling and Telephone Counseling can be a great way to use many of the theories discussed in Gladding's text. About the Author

KINDLE BUYERS BEWARE

KINDLE BUYERS BEWARE!! This is a great book, nothing wrong with it. HOWEVER, again Amazon is counting on its clients to just give up when receiving a low quality service. This Kindle version is marked as having "pages" but it doesn't, and for a textbook, pages are a must!! This is the second time I have been deceived by Amazon on this issue. If the Kindle version only has "location" please Amazon, do NOT put on the information that it has pages!!! You made me lose some precious time! I will NEVER purchase a textbook from Amazon...you fool me once...you fool me twice....NO MORE!
