Very Solid Introductory book.

I have been programming in C and C++ for about 6 years. That does not make me a leading expert, but certainly competent. A friend of mine was looking for a good book to teach an introductory programming class at a community college and he asked me to look this over and give my opinion.
My response was that this is a very easy to follow book. If you cannot learn C++ from this book, then you cannot learn C++. Now it is absolutely a beginners book and does not go into advanced topics. But if you are looking for a very solid introductory book. All the basics are laid out in a step by step easy to read format. COMPLETE code samples are spelled out in the text.
I must make a comment to the reviewer that gave this one star based on 'formatting'...I am not a particular fan of this author. I have only read one of his other books, and did not particularly care for it. However the comment that the code is not indented properly is simply laughable. Most of us are concerned with the accuracy and clarity of a programming book, not with how far the author indents code in a function....
Bottom line is that if you want a solid intro book this is it.

I have been programming for a long time. But from time to time I like to look over beginners books, to see how good they are. This one is pretty good. The code examples that I checked (about 1/4 of them) worked exactly as written. The text was very clear. The code and the text follow ISO standard C++ pretty well, and let you know anything that deviates.
I thought that this is one of the top 10 best beginners books. Deitel and Deitel are just too complex for beginners (but a great place for you after you have a few months of C++ under your belt), Schildts books are too long, etc. This book is short and to the point. In a little over 300 pages you get the essentials of C++. However it should be noted that you get the ESSENTIALS...it does not even try to cover many advanced topics. And thats probably one of the books strengths. It does not confuse the beginner with extra things they don't need.
I think if you are looking for a first C++ book then this is one of the top 10 on the market...

IT HELPED ME

Look, I have never programmed in my life. This book says it was meant for people like me. As I read the book it was very easy to understand. The code examples worked exactly as written. In short I started this book not having a clue how to program and by the time I was done I had written several. I was also able, after reading this book, to move on to more complex books. Finally I give this five stars because of the author. I had a question and used his website to email him. He responded quickly and politely and helped me. And that was very nice of him.
I see the other reviews of this book are mixed. I guess its true what they say, different strokes for different folks. Some people love this book, some people don't. My advice is that if you know little or nothing, and want to be writting C++ programs quickly, then this is your book.

Freely I Served is the gripping memoir of Stanislaw Sosabowski who became one of the most senior Polish commanders during the Second World War.  After seeing service with the Austrian Army in World War I, the author joined the newly created Polish Army in 1918. By September 1939 he was commanding 21st Infantry Regiment in the Battle of Warsaw against overwhelming German forces. Taken prisoner, he made a daring escape to join the Polish Army in France before evacuating to England together with 3,000 fellow countrymen.  In 1941 he formed the First Polish Independent Parachute Brigade which he trained and commanded for the next three years. Although created for the liberation of Poland, the Brigade, led by the author, parachuted into Arnhem in September 1944 and fought with great courage. Sosabowski provides a unique insight into this ill-fated operation. At the time his frank style and determined views resulted in confrontations with his British senior officers, 'Boy' Browning in particular, and he was forced to resign. Many felt that he was made a scapegoat.  While Freely I Served records the author's wartime experiences, it is more than a memoir. The Author, ever a true patriot, intended it to be a tribute to the many brave Polish soldiers who fought to regain their country from Nazi occupation and, in this aim, he undoubtedly succeeds. Readers will find it an inspiring and revealing account.

About the Author
Born in 1892 Stanislav Sosabowski fought in The Great War with the Austrian Army before joining the new Polish Army in 1918. His service during the Second World War is recounted in this book. Post-war he was active in Veteran affairs. He died in Warsaw in 1967.

More than Market-Garden

As an amateur student of Market-Garden, I looked forward to reading this memoir. Gen. Sosabowski does a good job of telling the story of the Polish Brigade's role but I really enjoyed this memoir for the rest of his story. Well worth reading for his story of the defense of Poland in 1939 and his escape to continue the fight.

Warfare in Prehistoric Times.

Ancient Warfare edited by John Carman and Anthony Harding explores not only warfare in prehistoric cultures by why it is important that we study it and how we study it. The fifteen chapters dive into the question about the very nature of war. Can people armed with stone weapons and defending their towns with dirt walls carry out what we would call war? When a ditch can be used to keep out invaders and keep in cattle, is it a sign of warfare? When a tool can be used as a weapon and a weapon can be used as a tool how can researchers prove if fighting existed in a society thousands of years ago? When is an arrow head just a piece of trash and when it is sign of a warrior culture? How important was trade to fighting or did fighting fuel trade?
The book takes a close look at the material evidence, the bones, the ruins, from the stone age, up to the bronze age and into the iron age. Most of the chapters deal with Europe, but one chapter does focus on North America. The origins of violence is examined and so is warfare as a larger part of human civilization. It asks us the hard questions: Do our modern views twist what we see in the past? Do our ideas of gender, our need for a peaceful or warlike past depending on our modern theories of human evolution, our seeing the sword as a warrior's weapon and ONLY a warrior's weapon make us blind to some of the clues needed to make a complete picture? Do we put too much weight on human aggression or is military conflict just a minor piece in the story of our ancient world?

Easily the best book for serious futures traders wanting to make money

My title says it all, if you are a small speculator looking to make money in the markets then this is the best place to start. It is a must that you need to know what the biggest players in the markets are doing, and the best part is it is free to access, and the fact that the information is a week(?) old makes no difference if you are a trader who is looking to trade on a daily or weekly chart. I found it most helpful to use barchart.com. They have all the COT data already linked to a chart so there is no need to type in the numbers with microsoft excel or anything like that. I use the Commitment of Traders Line Chart. Once you apply this information a whole new world of futures trading will open up to you

Finally a book that puts the COT report in the proper perspective

This is the first book that I've read that shows how to properly use the Commitment of Traders report. In simple language, Larry systematically walks readers through the use of the information contained in the COT report to set up trades -- he even discloses a new indicator that is much more powerful than any other index related to the COT report I've seen thus far. When I started using this indicator in my trades, I saw my profits soar. Definitely a must have for the serious futures trader -- whether an expert or a novice!

A very good methodology for interprting the COT reports for trading

I have read the other reviews and found them to be inaccurate. The COT report is unique to futures however Larry has developed another indicator that provides a similar indicator that is applicable to stocks and futures markets that do not have COT reports available. Exit criteria are discussed on numerous occasions. While entrances are subjective Larry mentions this repeatedly, saying that trading involves 2 steps: 1) setup, which the COT reports can help provide and 2) entry trigger, which he provides some simple techniques he has used over the years.

While there are references to his advisory and educational services as well as the data/charting company that he uses they are not simply marketing gimmicks. When I study analysts, advisors and the like I prefer to be able to exactly duplicate their studies and verify them for myself and Larry's references are very beneficial in that regard.

Larry is truly one of the good guys in this oft misunderstood industry. He has been around for a long time and hopefully will be around for a long time to come.

Very useful

this book is very useful if you want to learn to use MIT's App Inventor, the computational capabilities of the software are a bit limited. However, this book provides very comprehensive and easy to understand steps to learn how to create your own apps. For $7 I would definitely recommend it.

Gave up!

Yes, I know it says it covers "New MIT Version," but the code blocks do not match what is in App Inventor 2. I got midway through chapter 4 and gave up. Without the code block matching what was found on the website, it was almost impossible to find the right combination of blocks to make the app work. I searched for a day on their website trying to get the For Range and the While loops to work and put it aside to move on, but when I got into chapter 4 Calling Functions I gave up. I think I am just going to use the website's tutorial and hopefully they will be using the correct blocks for their examples. I have to admit that I was thinking of purchasing the book, if it came out with a version specifically for App Inventor 2. However, the way updates happen and changes are made I can see no real guarantee that MIT will not change the code block again. It does appear that the code blocks in this book would have been fine if MIT had left them as they were in version 1.
