Not bad

I purchased this book to study for the patent bar. I agree that, like many other prep books out there, this book will not be sufficient in and of itself. That said, the MPEP is a thousand pages long and unless you plan to read through the whole thing, you will need a succinct and concise summary. This book does a good job of breaking things down. To best prepare, you will need to:
1) read through the prep book;
2) work through all the questions;
3) work through several practice exams.
I studied for about three weeks and passed on the first try using this book, the MPEP online at the USPTO website, and old practice exams.

OK but not sufficient

This is a good book if you want to learn the basics. I highly doubt the veracity of the the 5-star review for this book. The biggest problem with this book is that it is not sufficient in and of itself for passing the patent bar exam. Another problem is that it will be out of date very soon given the patent reform act that just passed. Therefore, if you are not planning on taking the exam for some time, I would wait or buy another guide that provides free updates.
The best way to study for the exam (in my opinion) is by going through the old questions and answers. There are other guides out there that actually provide all the old questions and are frequently updated (therefore you will be safe when the PTO decides to test new material). Other patent bar guides also cost less. Therefore, overall this book is 3-start product.

Excellent "Poor Man's Guide"

I thoroughly enjoyed this guide and I highly recommend it. While I had a fairly rudimentary knowledge of patent law prior to reading this guide, I was able to pass the exam about a month ago on my first try. It was a great alternative to the PLI course, which I had no desire to dish out thousands of dollars for. I would suggest reading it over a couple times, working out all of the practice problems, and supplementing your study with practice tests and reading relevant sections from the MPEP (currently tested version). I would also suggest working on your MPEP searching skills - this will be a big help on test day since the exam has changed quite a bit since 2003.
When the law changes next year, I expect this guide to become obsolete instantly. I would hope that an updated version is released in the future to address these changes.
