Karna's Wife: The Outcast's Queen is a splendid tale of Karna, the unsung hero of Mahabharata, told from the perspective of his wife Uruvi. This book renders a unique view of karna's life as never seen before. The story is written in the genre of magic realism, retelling the classic story of Karna from a different angle. The novel begins with an accomplished kshatriya princess, Uruvi, falling in love with Karnaa sutaputraand choosing him over Arjun. Stoking the anger of many, Uruvi must now face the social implications of her marriage and also use her love and intelligence to be accepted by her husband Karna and his family. Even though Uruvi secures a prime place in the life of Karna, giving counseling and guidance to him, his devotion to Duryodhana is beyond her ability to change. Being a queen for an outcastKarna, Uruvi faces a lot of struggles. Amidst all her hardships, she stands firmly on Karna's side, giving him a great support, even when the whole world turned against him due to his misfortunes and fate. The essence of the story lies in the representation of Karna during the Kurukshetra war between Pandavas and kauravas. Karna's loyalty with his guru Duryodhana, his guru's love for his disciple, Karna's birth mystery are some of the themes explored in the book. The book is about Karna, but only told wholly from his wife's eyes. Karna's Wife: The Outcast's Queen came as a surprise to readers who are familiar with the story of Mahabharata. This refreshing tale of Karna makes an impact to the readers on his tragic and virtuous life.

Creative take on well know characters
By Annaji
"Karna's Wife: The Outcast's Queen" was exactly as I imagined it to be ... an excellent painting of various well known characters. It is not a narration of The Mahabharata. It is study of various characters from Karna's wife Uruvi's perspective. And therein lies the beauty of the book.
I was constantly reminded of Sir Isaac Asimov, my favorite author. Asimov does not tell a story ... he transports the reader to the settings of his stories, like a fly on the wall, and allows them to experience first hand what is happening around. Kavita exactly did that. She does not describe a scene. She just lets you experience it.
Now, the beauty of the book is that, you need not have read or have known the story of Mahabharata. I actually, blanked my mind sometimes, and re-read a chapter or an scene, just to visualize how someone who does not know Mahabharata would comprehend. Surprisingly, nothing would be lost and the experience would be equally rich. Again, as I said before, the book is not a narration of The Mahabharata. It is putting on display for all to experience the author's capability to present various characters from Uruvi's perspective. And by the time you are done, you relate to Uruvi's experiences and perspectives and feel they are no different from any other girl, you would have known. Same hopes, same courage, same pain, disillusionment, helplessness and adjustment, and finally compromise.
But what is it that is really griping about the book? The conversations ... and lots of them ... Uruvi is proud to be her father's baby. So naturally lot of conversations with her father, testy conversations with her mother, conversations with her beloved Karna, Karna's first wife, Karna's mother and brother, Bhishma, Arjuna, Duryodhana, Sakhuni, Kunti and of course Krishna. And Kavita intelligently uses each of these conversations to move the story forward, presenting a unique perspective of Uruvi. It very well makes you wonder what the perspective of each of the other characters would be and Kavita teases you to speculate.
Out of all the conversations, the one between Uruvi and Karna, after he returns from the game of dice and confesses to his role, is just plain excellent. You really wonder whether Kavita was around. Get the book and read it. You will not regret.
It is natural to get challenged whether the story is authentic, thereby questioning whether it is true to the original or what really happened. This book is classified as fiction and boldly presents Kavita's creativity. Works of Gods or their messengers can be deemed to be beautiful but surely capability to conjure up magic helps. But when works like this are turned out by humans, you know it is hard work coupled with patience of thought which brings forth the results.

Okay book...
By Abhi...
I have always been an admirer of Karna’s character; he has been an embodiment of valor, virtues and true friendship. For me while Karna himself is such a fascinating and powerful character, reading about his wife was more exciting. The title attracted me more toward itself than the several reviews that I read about it.
Women have, to a greater extent, been ignored in Indian mythologies. Barring a few exceptions, women find scant mentions in both Ramayana and Mahabharata. For instance – we venerate Lakshmana and his dedication towards his brother, but are unfamiliar with the fact that his wife, Urmila, slept the entire 14 years of his exile, so that he could stay awake. We have vilified Ravana and his entire family but are ignorant of his wife Mandodari’s piousness and the key role she played in protecting Sita. The list goes on – Tara, Amba, Satyavati, Hidimba, Ulupi, Vidula, etc.
Another such woman who has been disregarded all along but is worth knowing about is Uruvi, the wife of Karna, and that is what Kavita KanĂ© has attempted to do in her book. People know about Vrushali – Karna’s first wife but not much about Uruvi.
Uruvi’s story begins with an archery contest where Karna, a charioteer’s son, openly challenges Arjun, and is in turn ridiculed for his low birth. Enamored by his charms and godly beauty, she falls in love with him, and in spite of the social humiliation, marries him. Her story runs parallel to the events of the Mahabharata. How each of those events shape her and her peaceful life, forms the gist of Kavita’s book.
When Karna’s unflinching loyalty to Duryodhana leads him towards the path of destruction, she tries to persuade him, unsuccessfully. When Draupadi is tarnished in the royal court by Kauravas, she acts as Karna’s conscience-keeper and leaves him. When it becomes evident that the Great War would lead to Karna’s death, she tries to dissuade him from participating. Many such episodes which directly affect her, but on which she has no control over, are beautifully narrated.
‘Karna, each day I live in the fear that I shall lose you…’ she whispered brokenly. ‘You will lose me only through death, Uruvi,’ he added calmly, drawing her close. ‘Through nothing and nobody else!’
The way in which Uruvi’s story is blended with Mahabharata is remarkable. Kavita has done a laudable job in bringing out the emotions of a wife who, despite knowing the future of her husband, is helpless. The well-known characters of Kunti, Duryodhana, Bheeshma, Dronacharya, Arjuna, Draupadi, etc. perfectly fit into the story. The story of Mahabharat has not been explained in a great detail but though this book is a work of fiction, the author has maintained the structure of the great epic intact.
At times the plot unfolds at a very slow pace and becomes boring, but one must remember that the emotions of an upset woman are rather knotty, and narrating it is not an easy job. This is the story of the woman behind’s Karna’s success; a woman who stood with him through his thick and thin; a woman who supported him despite his faulty ways; the story of Uruvi, the outcast’s wife.
