Intelectually rigorous

This book is one of the few books on the topic of Vastu that shows an understanding of the complexity of the science. The author makes it clear that most of the books in the market place and most of the so-called vaastu consultants are a sham. The author states, without hesitation, that this is a complex and multilayered science that requires deep study with a person from an authentic Sthapatya Veda tradition. there are few true sthapati's living today. The author apraises the reader of the fact that modern vaastu experts have fractionalized the science by taking only the parts that suit them and their financial well being. This has resulted in thousands of misinformed people with the hopes of improving their lives through Vastu.

The author begins with a good outline of the overall procees that a Sthapati (Vaastu architect) goes through to build a proper vaastu compliant house. It becomes clear that Vaastu is concerned with building from the ground up, taking into account numerous complex factors, and has little to do with yantras, paint color or fixing bad vaastu.

I appreciate the authors' thorough review of the topic. No one should expect that they could build a proper vaastu house from reading a book. It takes proper study over time to assimilate and apply the principles put forth in Vaastu Shastras. Can an EMT medic perform brain surgery? NO. Can a layperson who has not studied over time under the guidance of an authentic Sthapati from a traditional Vishwakarman family build a proper vaastu home? NO. I have personally seen the catastrophic results of people attempting to build a vaastu house after taking a workshop from one of the many so called self professed vaastu experts - their life went into shambles. Do yourself a favor and don't try to fix your existing house and worse yet don't study with people who don't know what they are talking about. If the words, yantra, color, bells, chimes, moving furniture or any other object are in the vocabulary of the person you are seeking to study with run in the opposite direction. The fact is, right now there is only one living Shilpi Guru (person authorized to teach this knowledge) and he has designated very few people to teach under his name. Find him and his teachers.

The vaastu Shastras (traditional texts on Vaastu) are difficult to understand and interpret. A lay person cannot really understand the proper meaning without having already studied with a traditional Vaastu Architect. There are several misunderstanding positied in this text but over all it is well done. For example, the author, and many other authors, mention that the standard measure used in Vaastu building is the Angula. This is correct. However, the exact meaning of "Angula" is misinterpreted. An angula is 1 3/8 inches exactly. It is the traditional measure of the standard angula and evidence of that fact has been found even as far back as 7000 BC in the Indus Valley. There, in excavations, traditional measuring sticks have been found (called Hasta)amongst other building tools. The hastas found are 24 integers of 1 3/8 inches exactly. The measuring stick is 33 inches long. Anyone from an ancient tradition will use that measurement for building. It is the ancient and traditional measure used for thousnds and thousands of years. (there are other measurements byond the hasta but most are based on the 1 3/8 inch.

This book is a waste of money and time. It cost me 150 dollars and it was the worst scam. The book is better off in the trash rather than on the bookshelf. The book is poorly written and has no useful information in planning a vastu house.

A must for Kon fans

Satoshi Kon is easily one of my favorite filmmakers. He's one of the rare types that can tell any style of story and make it uniquely his.

Andrew Osmond's book The Illusionist details this one of a kind filmmaker and his works.

If you're not familiar with Kon's work you may want to rent some before reading, since much of this book is simply an in-depth dissection of his stories.

The book is broken into 6 parts- one for Kon's early life and career and one for each of his films and TV series. Each work has a brief summary, a plot breakdown, a more detailed analysis and a sidebar of interesting facts.

Personally, I would have liked more insight into Kon himself and less plot breakdowns of his films, all of which I've seen multiple times. There's not much of a point in this book catering to anyone but established fans, so you might as well not talk much about things people already know

I at least would like to have seen pictures of Kon's actual drawings rather than just screen-caps and promo stills.

I will say the book prompted me to rewatch Millennium Actress for the first time in quite a while as well as try to purchase the now hard to come by DVDs of Paranoia Agent. So even though I would have liked to see this book done differently, it has made me better appreciate one of my favorite filmmakers. So if you're already a big fan of Satoshi Kon, this book may be right up your alley.

Welcome to the (un)real world

Satoshi Kon is somewhat of a rarity these days: a touted maker of anime who is also a respected filmmaker. Although his first major release in the US was 2007's "Paprika", he made three prior films: "Perfect Blue", "Millennium Actress", and "Tokyo Godfathers", as well as the 13-episode TV series "Paranoia Agent." All of them are different, and all of them are complex, but they are all undeniably Kon's.

In this book, Andrew Osmond has done a fine job getting under the surface of these works. He devotes a chapter to each, examining its origins, followed by a plot synopsis and critical analysis. Each chapter also features sidebars full of additional interesting information; kind of like an extra commentary track. The book is full of quotes from Kon himself, taken from many sources, including interviews conducted by Osmond. This book isn't a superficial highlight reel, but a serious and critical study of the psychology and history of Kon and his work.

Osmond has obviously done his homework, making comparisons to characters and trends spanning all five of Kon's releases, as well as other anime. He has a clear understanding of what Kon is trying to say, and communicates his observations and theories in easy-to-follow, entertaining prose. While Osmond is clearly a fan of Kon and his work, he has no problem pointing out what he considers to be inconsistencies or shortcomings. He keeps his analysis objective, which makes it all the more valuable. The book is also quite up-to-date, mentioning Kon's next project, "The Dream Machine", currently scheduled for a 2010 release.

This book is not for newcomers to Kon. It is rife with spoilers, and it must be noted that Kon's anime deals with adult subject matter, such as sex and violence (unlike directors like Miyazaki, none of Kon's current catalog is suitable for children). However, Osmond's book is a perfect and rewarding companion for those familiar with Kon, as well as those who want to learn more about this intriguing artist. The book is insightful, well-researched, and intelligent, while still being an entertaining read. Osmond deserves much credit for keeping the book moving swiftly, while not glossing over the complicated subjects of Kon's anime.

Most of Kon's work deals with reality and how the perception of his characters affects that reality. Kon's characters are three-dimensional, and seem like real people despite being animated. Each of Kon's work is bursting with creativity, but for different reasons. Whether it's the shifting of reality in "Millennium Actress" and "Paprika", the antics of "Tokyo Godfathers", or the examination of the effects of guilt and identity in "Paranoia Agent" and "Perfect Blue", Kon examines what it means to be human with a flair that's quite unlike any other contemporary filmmaker.

While it can be argued that each of Kon's works may be labeled fantasy, it is not always clear exactly what Kon considers to be fantasy or reality (Osmond tends to agree). Kon's anime gives an equal workout to the mind and the heart, and does not always tie up events with a neat bow.

Satoshi Kon is one of the most interesting and talented directors in contemporary cinema, and Osmond's fascinating and carefully written book gives Kon the attention he deserves.

the loss of Satoshi Kon from the anime ranks is felt deeply- though Makato Shinkai is looked upon as a spiritual successor he is not quite the same. This book helps bring some elements in perspective. I would like to see Paranoia Agent finally get a re-release- but hey - that's the problem with copyright- the owner dies and the last copyright holding company is out of business and we are left losing out on a masterpiece work.

This is a very good book for coating engineers. The richness of the explanation of a variety of subjects is worthy of reading it carefully, from beginning to the end.
And in addition, I find the process of reading the book is quite a happy thing of enjoying the beauty of English, though I am not a native speaker.(I'd like to look forward to reading similar comments so as to confirming this impression of mine)

About the Author

HIROSHI OZAWA is an associate professor at the Science University of Tokyo and Kendo kyoshi, 7th dan. He was born in Saitama prefecture in 1950 into a highly respected Kendo family which was instrumental in incorporating Kendo into the physical education curriculum as a core subject. He makes regular trips abroad to demonstrate and teach Kendo, and also writes books about samurai ethics.

Very good

I own both the Complete Kendo book and the Heart of Kendo book.
This book is by far better than the other 2 as far as providing technical information.

Pros:
- The pictures are much better drawn (at least when compared to the other 2 books). Still in some cases a photo would have been more useful.
- The section on kata is presented as numbered steps in 2 columns, one for uchidachi and the other for shidachi. This makes it much easier to understand.
- Many of the movements are described as numbered lists. The other 2 books I looked at just write long paragraphs of text making it very difficult to decipher, even after you've learned the movement in class.
- Goes thru a complete treatment on how to put on the equipment.
- Extensive coverage of waza.

Cons:
- The information in the book is not ordered in the same order as you would learn things in a Kendo class so you will need to hop around chapters.
- Sadly there is no index in this book either. I don't quite understand why in this day and age books don't have indices. All 3 Kendo books I own do not have them.
- The descriptions are rather brief so it reads more like a manual than a book.
- The sections on suburi describe that you should swing "big". So in most of the diagrams the shinai is shown drawn all the way behind and almost touching the person's back (even in shomen suburi). What the book does not say though is that this is intended initially to train beginners to swing big. But when you actually perform a strike you generally aren't supposed to swing that far behind your back. But I am nitpicking...
- Book does not cover equipment maintenance.
- There is some use of terms that are not defined in the book.
- Book does not explain how to put himos onto men.

I would recommend getting this book in addition to one of the other 2 books to fill in some missing gaps. However even after owning all 3 books I find none of them cover the full body of knowledge that a beginner encounters. So these books are no substitute for a real class (obviously).

More than just technique...

The path of the sword is not taken lightly. It involves practice, improvment and confidence in the technique. This book is a good way to get you started. It covers basic techniques, ettiquette, terms and some very good advice. I would recommend this book along with "Iai, the art of drawing the sword" by Darrel Craig as these books compliment each other very well.

Higly Recommended for Beginners.

As a beginner in Kendo this book has definately been helpful. Because the Japanese terms (or words) are used throughout the book it has helped me retain them (I couldn't seem to remember them when learned in the Dojo). It's filled with illustrations, however, I don't think any pictures could illustrate the moves enough. These illustrations combined with what you learn in the Dojo (or on video) should be sufficient, they are definately better than most. In the appendix is good information (and rules) on official Kendo tournaments. I'd say it's a must-have book for anyone new to the sport.
Topics that I would have liked to see, but does not include: There is nothing on the care and maintenance of the Bogu or Shinai, or how to select the proper equipment. There is nothing on testing and advancement (Kyu to Dan), although perhaps this varies from Dojo to Dojo anyway. I would have liked to see a chapter on Iaido as well (however, this is because Iaido is an essential part of our Dojo's Kendo training, this may not be the case with all Dojos).
Overall a great book. If you're looking for a book on Kendo and don't have this one, get it, you won't be sorry.

The Essence of Meditation Distilled for Anyone

This book accomplishes so much with so little. Whether you're new to meditation and are looking for an introduction (or "invitation"), or you're an experienced practitioner who might enjoy a refreshing serving of insight, this book is for you. Cohn shares the fundamental concepts of meditation not only in clear, imminently readable language (you could easily read this to your children), he also invites the reader to experience the very insights he explains. Plenty of books contain exercises, ask the reader to set the book down and do something, but Invitation to Meditation uniquely succeeds because of the way it is presented, the form of the book itself. This is the polar opposite of some dense academic text exploring esoteric nuances (neither Buddhism nor any other particular meditation discipline are mentioned at all). Cohn writes in short, plain, expressive sentences designed to be savored and experienced in the moment. In short, Invitation to Meditation delivers, and I for one look forward to sharing this Invitation with anyone open to exploring the wonderful value of experiencing the here and now. In other words, everyone.

Few words, Powerful teachings

What a gem! The format is artful and spacious, the read is smooth and flowing, the teachings are accessible and profound. Whether one chooses to read it in one sitting or to savor it slowly over time this book is one I'll want to read and reread. Cohn's invitation is gentle and sincere without being preachy or insistent. By the time I was less than half way through I felt clear, calm, and connected; as if I had just been meditating. I'm looking forward to sharing this sweet, succinct, accessible treasure with those in my life who would otherwise be uninterested. Now, if I can just follow Cohn's lead as I approach them...
