Worthwhile for Admirers

Discourse on Political Economy essentially takes the next step after the famous Discourse on Inequality - asking how we can legitimize and improve such a corrupt society. It does not have easy answers but does reject the seemingly obvious one that we return to a primitive state; Rousseau has often been charged with this, but he actually explicitly denies it. This Discourse is far less original but has several salient points and is well-written. It is an important contribution to the question that has dominated Western thought since at least Plato and essential reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in it. One should certainly read Inequality and probably Rousseau's other best-known works first, but anyone interested in his thought should stop here eventually.

The Amerindian understanding of life forces as being finite, scarce, unequally distributed, and in constant circulation yields a concept of all living beings as competing for vital energy. The capture of human beings is an extreme manifestation of this understanding, but it marks an important element in the ways Amerindian "captive slavery" was misconstrued by European conquistadors. Love, love, love this book. Haven't had a failure yet or one that I haven't liked (or that my customers haven't liked- I own a café). To those reviewers who've complained about the measurements (metric) and the temperatures (Celsius), now you might have an appreciation of how non-Americans feel when we struggle with the cup measurements and hard-to-find ingredients that we encounter in US cookbooks. Highly recommend.

This book is not written for an American audience. The measurements were European (i.e. grams and weights for ingredients). Sorry, call me lazy, but I just don't want to hassle with the conversions. Also, I'm not sure whose tastes these recipes might appeal to, but some of the recipes were pretty far out there as far as flavor combinations. In addition, the ingredients and tools needed are somewhat uncommon and hard to come by in everyday stores (by the way, I live in a fairly large city). Beautiful food photos. Nice to look at, but not a great cookbook.

Irving Belateche is an author, screenwriter, and adjunct professor at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. He's written the Amazon bestsellers "Einstein's Secret," "The Origin of Dracula," and "H2O." He's also written screenplays for Paramount, Universal, Sony, Lionsgate, and Warner Bros. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son.

Excellent!

Wow! Just finished it. It's a great ride, full of twists and turns and surprises. It's well written and sweeps you up into the mystery immediately. I also loved that the main character was smart and relentless. I don't want to post any spoilers, but I also thought it had a unique take on time travel. That was refreshing. Definitely a fantastic read!

A Surprisingly Entertaining Find

Okay, I will confess. I picked this one up because it was offered at 99 cents. I thought it might be worth trying. What I found was an engaging mix of history, plausible conjecture, and interesting action. I had trouble putting the book down and getting on with my life.

In my greed, looking for cheaper books on Kindle, I have to wade through lots of typos, poor spelling, and horrendous grammar. This book has none of those. It is a tight, well-written book with absolutely no distracting editing errors. The writing style kept me in the story, the characters were interesting and believable, and I found myself enjoying the book more than I ever would have imagined.

If I had any criticism, it would be that I thought it ended a little too abruptly, and would have liked to have known more in the "wrap-up." But, knowing what I know now, if I had it to do all over again, I would buy the book, and I would be willing to pay more than 99 cents.

Any other comments would be "spoilers," and I don't want to do that. If you are reading this, I want you to buy the book. I have never met the author, have no personal interest in publicizing this book, and will get no remuneration from recommending it. I just like sharing something I enjoyed this much.

A Fantastic Thriller

Einstein's Secret is the best thriller to come down the pike in a long, long time. I really enjoyed it. The book delivered on every level. There were so many great twists and turns that I kept thinking the author couldn't top that one and then he did! The book was well written. It was literary, but also easy to read. The story has a great science fiction hook, but it's an incredible thriller at its heart. I highly recommend you check out this book.

Steve Brezenoff is the author of more than fifty middle-grade chapter books, including the Field Trip Mysteries series, the Ravens Pass series of thrillers, and the Return to Titanic series. In his spare time, he enjoys video games, cycling, and cooking. Steve lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Beth, and their son and daughter.

Spanish-born Marcos Calo began his career working for various Spanish animation studios as a concept artist for CGI movies. During that time he also worked freelance doing illustration, commercial work, and occasionally comic books. Marcos usually works digitally, although he still likes to start his drawings on paper first. After wandering around different cities, he is finally settled in A Coruña, where his collection of comics and picture books is always growing.

A light but entertaining easy read

It's always fun to have chapter book mystery/adventure stories set in locales that you have visited or plan to visit on a family vacation. Mount Rushmore is certainly the kind of Park a family will stop at while traveling, and this book would be a nice souvenir or a good way to anticipate such a trip. It's a little light on actual local flavor, but there is enough to give it a semblance of authenticity.

The mystery is pretty typical for a chapter book. It's simple, there are a lot of logical gaps, and the action is deeply implausible. But at this level we aren't exactly talking P.D. James, and it seems that the fun is more in the idea of a mystery and mystery solving, rather than in the details of the mystery's solution itself. On that score, this book is perfectly fine.

The other aspect of the book is the cast of regular characters. All of these books seem to feature the bully-of-the-month, but at least here the bully angle is soft-pedalled. I don't know why a stupid, mean, over-sized kid has become a necessary character in every kid's book published this year, but as I say at least it isn't featured here. What is featured is a solid core of bright kids who cooperate in solving the mystery, come up with good ideas, and support and encourage each other. Again, no mean or snotty vibe, which is also something becoming more common in these books.

So, a light frolic, competently written, with a satisfying plot and decent characters and interest. Certainly worth a try if your young reader likes a realistic setting and a bit of mystery/adventure.
